wireless stopped working

I have an acer laptop -it has never had a problem connecting to the network until recently when I was in college and tried to connect at the librar and so I think I changed a setting which I cannot fix.
The eth0 wired works no problem but wireless can see the router and the accepts the ssid but won't connect.

I tried drakconnect and this is the result:

start pcc -> network and internet ->remove a connection and then go on and remove the wireless interface.

Go to network and internet -> set up a new network interface  and go on and reset up the wireless interface and try again to connect.

Run uname -a, ipconfig, iwconfig and maybe lspci in konsole. Show us your results.

Hi, I've spent all weekend on this -can't believe it! The AR928x (module ath9k) is there and must be working because it shows me the ESSID on my router and another nearby wireless network also shows up-but it just won't go beyond the router to the internet (there is a red x on that part) so the internal lan works but something stops it going beyond that.
I finally went out and bought another wireless router -same thing.
The windows laptops owned by people who live in my house all have no problem, it is only the pclinuxos on my laptop (acer extensia 5630) which has the problem. It worked fine for over a year then all of a sudden refuses to budge.

If you are willing to step me through a process of elimination using the terminal (for example) I'm good at copy and pasting commands and I would be most grateful -the only other choice I have is a full re-install

You should reset the Cable/DSL modem..Not the router as a next step.

This suggests to me that there is something incorrect in your security settings. If you are 100% sure you got them right in PCC, I would suggest updating to a later kernel, preferably  2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs. The one you're using is getting long in the tooth and the newer one does a lot better with many wireless interface cards.

Hi,
I have been using a netgear Modem/router then yesterday I replaced it with a Billion Modem/router.
Both of these do the same thing.
they are 4 hardwired ports with wireless 802.11n and the other laptops (windows) in the house have no problem.
In order to use my Pclinuxos I have to run a very long cable from the Modem/Router to my laptop -whereas up until a couple of weeks ago
I had the same ability to use wireless on my Linux and the others have on their windows
I wish I could put my finger on what went wrong.

Forgot to mention that when I suspect security and all else fails, I will temporarily disable the router's security settings just to see if that cures it. At least try updating to the latest kernel first, though, because wireless N and WPA junk can be affected.

Also, this raises my security suspicion in your first post:

I am a little confused in synaptic, how to update the kernel without doing any damage
I wonder if you could please give me some explicit instructions which I can follow religiously?

I was going to upgrade my kernel -(which i want to do when i learn how) and all of a sudden on an empty desktop appeared a small screen with the heading "wicd network manager" -I put my essid login there and the right encyption and VIOLA it all came good. So now, Linux is my friend again. Still not sure what happened, but I'm sure glad to get rid of the long cable to my laptop!
I would appreciate a walk through on updating my kernel if you get the chance
