Firefox keeps crashing!
« on: August 25, 2011, 07:28:27 PM »
Hi All,

I had posted several weeks ago about my FF crashing and thanks to the kind help I received I disabled hardware acceleration and disabled & removed the only extension I had (the "padlock" extension).

Well my system is fully up-to-date but FF keeps crashing about every 20-30 minutes.

Here's the error message I get:

Quote
Add-ons: {972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}:6.0
BuildID: 20110811165603

EMCheckCompatibility: true
FramePoisonBase: 00000000f0dea000
FramePoisonSize: 4096
InstallTime: 1313555597
Notes: OpenGL: NVIDIA Corporation -- GeForce 7900 GT/GTO/PCI/SSE2 -- 2.1.2 NVIDIA 280.13

ProductName: Firefox
ReleaseChannel: release
SecondsSinceLastCrash: 1259
StartupTime: 1314320659
Theme: classic/1.0
Throttleable: 1

Vendor: Mozilla
Version: 6.0

This report also contains technical information about the state of the application when it crashed.

Does anyone know how to resolve this rather annoying issue?

As always I welcome and appreciate your help.

I forgot to mention that it once froze my entire computer and I had to do a hard reset.

Just now my screen flash (I could see a rainbow of colours along the edge for a second and then I was brought to the PCLinux login screen (which I have set to automatically bypass).

Could it be that my video card is on the fritz???

It's about five years old.

I would hate to spend the money to change a video card if it wasn't really necessary (imagine paying for a new card and then the problem persists anyway).

As always I welcome your thoughts.

Did you try doing the good ole R.E.I.S.U.B. before just pushing the power button?

http://pclinuxoshelp.com/index.php/R.E.I.S.U.B._reboot_your_system

it would be far better for the system to try it before just pushing the power button.

Hi I have found FF 6.0 to be very buggy and cause crashes.
Re hardware. try powering of and unplugging and reseating all your cards, memory and leads, this some times helps (Just fixed a friends PC like this 10 mins ago by getting him to do this)

Firefox 6 hasn't crashed once on my setup - I've found it to be rock solid. (then again, so was FF5)

I don't know which Firefox addon that is, but it's definitely an addon causing the crash. Try disabling all, then adding them one at a time. Or, do the reverse. Disable one at a time.

+1

A quick way to start with no add-ons is to go  Help > Restart with add-ons disabled

If things go okay with no add-ons then try dj's advice

I've been experimenting with the add-ons that I found in FF.
Well I had them all disabled and it still crashed with the following error message:

Quote
Add-ons: {972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}:6.0.1
BuildID: 20110830092941
CrashTime: 1315064718
EMCheckCompatibility: true
FramePoisonBase: 00000000f0dea000
FramePoisonSize: 4096
InstallTime: 1314844255
ProductName: Firefox
ReleaseChannel: release
SecondsSinceLastCrash: 67079
StartupTime: 1315064696
Theme: classic/1.0
Throttleable: 1

Vendor: Mozilla
Version: 6.0.1

This report also contains technical information about the state of the application when it crashed.

Yesterday I was watching a video on Youtube and suddenly it stopped playing and a message in the video box popped up stating my flash plugin had crashed.
I even had Opera crash on me stating that there may be a potential problem with Flash.

Here is the list of add-ons in FF:

1) DivX Browser plugin - mplayer plugin 3.55
2) Google VLC multimedia plugin 1.0 - mplayer plugin 3.55
3) Java (TM) plugin 1.6.0_26
4) MozPlugger 1.13.0
5) Mplayer plugin 3.55
6) Quicktime plugin 7.4.5
7) Realplayer 9 - mplayer plugin 3.55
8 ) Shockwave Flash 10.3 r183
9) Skype buttons for Kopete - I've never used Skype and don't know why this add-on is here!!!
10) Windows media player plugin - mplayer plugin 3.55

For the life of me I don't recall ever installing ANY plugin and yet here are ten of them no less.

Just to add to the mystery, the other day when I was using my computer, it suddenly lost all power (like it would in a blackout, but the power to the rest of the house never even flickered).

Any ideas what's happening????

I am at a loss.

I have manually dissabled all add-ons and yet it still crashes and the error message indicates there is an add-on at fault.

As always I welcome and would greatly appreciate your help in solving this problem.

Neo,

You have listed your PLUGINS - there are not the same as addons (most of the plugins you list are from the java-browserplugin and mplayerplugin apps in the repo.)

Can you list the addons installed?

Jase

Hi Neo,

The Plugins are - in the main - installed at the same time as Firefox and form a fundamental part of the browser (for good or bad)

If you have disabled some/all of them that could "potentially" cause problems as the site may be looking for them.

Another option would be to close Firefox and move your .mozilla folder somewhere safe.

Then when Firefox is next started it will create a brand new folder

Have you tried reinstalling the flash-player-plugin?

Are you running KWin or Compiz, and if so do they seem to work okay?

Well when I go to FF Add-On section I have "Get Add-ons" which is a lengthy list of several add-ons.
Under "Extensions" it says I don't have any of this type of Add-on installed.
Under Appearance I only have Default 6.0.1
and under Plugins you have the list I provided above.

I take it that I don't have any Add-ons then.
But apparently an Add-on (the same one everytime) is causing a problem???

Hi Menotu,
I disabled the plugins as a troubleshooting step.
FF was crashing when they were all enabled, when they are all disabled and when only some are disabled.

If you could you please tell me where I can find the .mozzila folder then I will try your suggestion.

I just checked Synaptic and apparently I do have Compiz installed, although I have no idea what it or KWin are.

According to FF, my Quicktime and Mozplugger plugin need updating.
Of course when you click on update it brings you to a Windows page and asks you to download...

Open your file browser. It should open in your home directory. Find the option to "Show hidden" or "Show all files and folder". Set it to show all files and folders, including hidden ones. There will be a folder named .mozilla. Rename (not delete) the folder to something like .mozilla-renamed, or anything of your choosing. Don't do this while Firefox is running. After renaming the folder, start Firefox.

Compiz and KWin are composite managers. KWin can be turned on and off and configured from within the KDE Control Panel. After installing Compiz, you have to enable it by going to PCLinuxOS Control Center > Hardware > Configure 3D Desktop effects.

If you enable either Compiz or KWin, enable only one. Not both.
