How much swap do you have? Are you using it much?

Check your swappiness.

Code: [Select]
$ cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness
If your swappiness returns a 0, then you're not using it much.

I would think that somewhere between 70 to 85 would be ideal for you. But do let others concur to this suggestion.

Code: [Select]
# echo 75 > /proc/sys/vm/swappiness
I hope that could be of help, ms_meme.

it appears that she has her swap space set to 2 GB and none of it is in use.

               total             used   free
Swap:      2176768          0      2176768

Find a new hobby should remove all the problems.  :P  Adding ram just isn't an option  :'( so will continue here. :)

Hi ms_meme,

going on ...  ;)

PCLinuxOS Menu -> More Applications -> Terminals -> Konsole
type su - <ENTER> followed by your root password when requested, <ENTER>

type the following commands:
chkconfig | grep "5:on"
free

this time you should be able to copy and post back the whole text output.

Also, did you noticed any improvement today compared to yesterday ?

I don't really know if I have seen a difference yet.  As I have reported in the past...sometimes it's sluggish and sometimes not.  I haven't done any 'heavy' computing today, so don't want to mislead you one way other the other.

depending from me, I would turn off the highlighted services, but I will wait for additional comments from other knowledgeable members... may be I'm missing something.

mysql is a backend for akonadi, which in turn is used from dikigam and kmail, that ms_meme don't use, she is using thunderbird.
pkctdvd is needed to mount writable CD/DVD, don't thinks ms_meme is using that feature.
postfix, as a mail server, actually can only send system messages, don't think ms_meme is reading system posts.
snmpd, as network management tool, probably is unused.
squid, is a proxy server, probably is not needed.
sshd, e secure shell server, it's needed only if someone need to access ms_meme machine from a remote/external machine.
xfs, should be needed only from very old X software, I have disabled it on my system without visible effects until now.

Comments appreciated, thank you!

Thanks Jase,

most of all I'm a bit unsure about mysqld, don't know if it's needed somewhere else other then digikam/kmail/akonadi
or if akonadi is needed from other packages other than digikam/kmail.

ms_meme,
in the meantime reopen the Konsole terminal, su to root and type (copy & paste) in the following commands:

chkconfig pkctdvd off
chkconfig postfix off
chkconfig snmpd off
chkconfig squid off
chkconfig sshd off
chkconfig xfs off

OK ms_meme,
please ignore the warnings, nothing to worry about.

I would like to disable the net_applet, that small icon usually at right bottom of the screen that indicate that your network connection is up and running.
That alone it's eating nearly 20 Mb.

Are you possibly afraid of that ? Note that your network connection will continue to work as usual, only you would not see that icon,
also note that at any time you can start that icon, if needed from PCLinuxOS menu -> More Application -> Monitoring -> NetApplet.

What you say about ms_meme ?
