I thought, that because I had installed this Epson Perfection 3490 scanner on a different machine last year and had it working, that I would just install the Epson scanner on another machine this month. Not so.
I used PCLinux Control Centre to do the install and received the message that the install was complete and that the a Hauppauge scanner was available on the system!
Having done a lot of reading it seems that the latest 2.6 kernels may not support some Epson scanners.
A visit to to this web site    http://avasys.jp/eng/linux_driver/   provided the softeware and good clear instructions how to install and run it.
This is probably breaking rules the answering my own question
Now that the scanner is up and running that completes my switch to PCLINUXOS.
A big thank you to those who work so hard so that we can have fine software like this.
