How do I get the nic cards to connect? (Solved)

I can't seem to get any of my computers to connect using the  NIC cards to connect.
I'm running PCLOS 2011 on 3 different computers, and PCLOS 2010 on a netbook.  I've tried changing the cables. I've gone through everything I can find here, and googling. I've tried connecting direct, and connecting through a network hub.  I've even tried connecting with Windows. I can't get any of them to connect with PCLOS.
I've got a Compaq desktop, an HP laptop, and Acer Aspire laptop, and an HP100 netbook.  I can connect as long as they all are running Windows.

I've given up on the netbook as no drivers show up for the nic in PCLOS.

What information do you need to start helping me figure this out?

What kind of network connection are you using? .....  cable, ADSL, 3G modem, other ..... ?
How many NICs are in the PC's? If more than one then maybe PCLOS is trying to use the incorrect one.

Try this on the desktop PC.
Completely disconnect it from the power for a minute or so.
Power up, and boot into Linux directly.

When at the desktop hover the mouse over the Network icon in the tray and post what the pop-up says.

If you have no connection, then go into PCC - Network and internet.
Delete ALL network connection you find there. (Remove a connection)
Next "Set up a new network interface" and create a new connection of the type you use, accepting all the defaults provided.

Post back with any information that might be relevant .....  as well as anything you may have tried previously and what the result of those tries were.
We do need to know what did not work and what error message was generated when it didn't.

I have an internet connection on the desktop that works.  It's an ATT 3G usb dongle that is configured as ppp0 IP address:32.176.56.60  Gateway: 10.0.0.1

What I'm trying to do is connect the computers to share files from one to the other.  I can't even get them connect, much less share any files.
I've setup eth0 on all the computers as auto everything.
I've never before had so much trouble getting an ethernet connection between computers as I have with PCLOS.

I'm gonna restart and try to wipe everything having anything to do with networking. Hopefully, I will be back in a few.

Would also be helpful if you said what network file sharing service you were trying to use to make these LAN connections/shares.

I must not have made myself clear.  I can't even get the NIC cards to even show they are connected.  The absolute bottom level connect.  
The network manager keeps saying connection failed.

Since I upgraded to PCLOS 2011 I can't make my internet connection with the network manager.  I have to use the net-applet to connect.

There is only one NIC in each of the computers. I've never gotten to the point of choosing a file sharing program yet. you have not, you first started talking about failing to connecting using words like "network manager" and "net-applet" and then you started talking about cables and hubs and then went on to file sharing file sharing 


Your computers have what network interfaces? wired or wireless?. "Connecting" is relevant only in a context of wireless networks and mentioning cables and hubs  and "connecting " while saying there is only one network interface just doesnt make sense.

Ok,, let me try again.  I'm trying to connect two computers with a cat 5 ethernet cable. 

Not wireless. 

Not trying to connect to the internet.

I'm just hooking two computers together with a cat 5 nic cable.

I know the hardware is good, as I can connect in Windows by just plugging in the cable. PCLOS, no cigar.

go to one computer and give the interface the following network properties

ip address: 10.10.10.10
netmask   :255.255.255.0

go to the other one and give it the following properties
ip address: 10.10.10.20
netmask   :255.255.255.0

Now, ping one computer from the other and see if you will get a responce.

From the computer with the "10.10.10.20" address, run this command and say what output were produced

ping -c 1 10.10.10.10

If you are plugging a cat 5 cable into a network card on computer 1 then plugging the same cat 5 cable into a network card on computer 2 and not going through a router, don't you need a crossover cable and both computers set not to use dhcp and assigned a static ip address?

I've reset the connection to the 10.10..... numbers.  When I tell it to connect, I get:

From what I understand, and it works in Windows, the new gigabit ethernet cards do not need a cross over cable.  They sense the connection and correct for the cable automatically.  

I'm actually trying to connect through a hub, so that would take care of any polarity problems anyway.

The led's on the hub are showing activity on both cables.

ok, you are connecting two computers through a hub and the hub shows it is seeing both your computers.

It should just work now. 

what does this command give you right after you issue the ping command

arp -n

On the desktop, configured with an IP of 10.10.10.10, it gives nothing.

On the laptop, configured with an IP of 10.10.10.20, it gives  bash: arp: command not found

I reran the ping command on both computers, and am showing a good ping now after setting awhile.

ping works so those computers can see each other now. Root problem of this thread is now solved? You should open another one to talk about your networking problem.

Make sure you first have installed these two packages: "samba-server" and "samba-client".

after you have installed them on both computers, run this command on one of them and both should show up.
