Hm, how? I can't seem to find it in synaptic nor in the thunderbird addons when I search for qtcurve?

You need this gtk-kde4 and this qtcurve-gtk2 package. It will remove the current theme while installing.

Then in Your KDE Control Center (aka Configure my desktop) Lost and Found section will appear. You can change GtK theme to QtCurve using the Gtk Theme Switch then from the menu.

Not sure will this helps. It's more a guess...

Edit: Thanks Longtom.

I am using LXDE on some of my machines too.

You can skip the gtk-kde4 package.

Just use the Gtk theme switch2 to switch between themes then. I am not sure what's causing his delay. I don't see it on my pentium 2 machine...

Ah, I see. At least now I know how to switch themes... didn't help with the speed but I did learn something new :-)

On, a whim, I tried using the "Emacs" theme in GTK2 Switch. That sped up thunderbird considerably. It's still not "instant" but it's much more usable now. Thanks for pointing me in that direction.

My signature shows my system.
I am using that standard "galssified" system, with win7 dark for the windows and gnome-technokraft icons.
I use thunderbird and have the latest version.
Emails open instantly and images for adverts take about another 10 seconds to load.
I don't know whether this is of any help at all, but thought it may be found useful.
Acer Aspire SA60, Intel Celeron 2.8ghz, 2gig ram, 1x80gig (xp), 1x80gig (PCLinuxOs) & 1x100gig (Storage) hard drives,Nvidia FX5700 graphic card, 22" lcd monitor @ 1680x1050res. Running dual boot Win XP and PCLinuxOS KDE on separate drives.
Even for this rig, performance is good and all 3d works
