OK just a FYI, I am killing of Latte as the reconfig is getting too time consuming prior to releasing a new iso, I will remove the iso from the download site within teh next few days.

I have been working on an something a little different from all the other iso's we have (its a  great deal simpler to maintain too) , no its not CLI only (it has X) and it will require testing.

Its name PCLinuxOS-Light (RAW Edition)

for those interested keep eyes peeled in this section of the forum its aimed at ADVANCED users and it will be of more interest if you really do not want any applications (Xbased or CLI) installed.

Don't be sad Neal, "Iced Latte" is a state of mind ....

I am trying to get round to packaging, but the time Latte takes to get ready (with its multiple wm's) can be frustrating when certain libs get updated.

As a result I have been lookinmg into a way that a low-ram iso can be used more effcetivly (I will keep my.dofiles in /etc/skel on the iso , so that latte is never too far away - I may once I get teh basics "down" build a 'task-iced latte' for RAW

RAW is a step in the right direction I think as it keeps things light, but unencumbered by my own desires of what a light iso means

RAW will (hopefully) be the ideal solution for anyone wanting a base to build from that does not want to have pre-conceived ideas of what should be or shoudl not be included in a light iso.

As it is atm RAW will take you to a (deliberatley) theme-less minimalistic window manager (icewm-light) on right clicking on the desktop it has only the standard configuration menu (configure my computer , the install function, user admin etc ), a file manager (mc) bleachbit, and synaptic , thats pretty much it.

The aim here is to install the iso (which is gzip'd not xz to help with lower ram installs) then add what you want, without any influence from me.

In fact originally I was not going to include a file manager, although found that I needed one during the creation of the iso so mc stayed as its a good toolkit (editor, filemanagement, ftp, ssh etc etc ).

It may also be a good test bed for new rpms - to ensure all necessary dependencies are mentioned.

In all its pretty RAW..

No more "Iced Latte" Neal  :'(

It seems I have a lot of reading ahead and since it just for advanced users I won't be able to ask questions in the forums, sooo  several friends will be receiving frequent PM's from me  ;D
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

Crow,

You will be fine, I know for fact that you can

a> keep a install up to date via synaptic
b> install new packages via synaptic
c> know how to use PM's in extreme circumstances.

RAW is pretty much what is at the heart of all the iso's, once again it is a stripped down MiniMe and I hope that we can have a support THREAD here just as we have had with Latte.

IF there is demand for this that exceeds the remit of these forums than I may consider offering support in the same way as gnome or Phinx do, we will have to see, whether there is an audience for this.

Neal,

Not to worry , no brain aches from me or RAW promise.

On the plus side if my eventual foray into packaging is an unmitigated disaster, Latte may well return again, although I think that as a concept RAW has to be given life to breath

Now all I need is some really simple "how to package for real dummy's" tutorials
* Hootiegibbon tries to make sense of all the packaging stuff ... for the Nth time

Jase I was told by a very smart Dude that the best way to learn packaging would be to sit with another packager and to be told what to do exactly step by step... Maybe one of the folks could PM You on IRC and talk You through the packaging process?

Hmm...... I was thinking about the kinds of questions that Crow might need to ask.

As for packaging, you can learn it. I have no doubts at all.

I was joking  ;D

See, PCLOS has made me very lazy, is too simple to use it.

Iced-Latte has been a blessing for a couple of machines with an Atom 230 processor, one of them is the nettop I use to seed remastered PCLinuxOS torrents but I understand that with all those windows managers is a big task to maintain it.

I welcome the opportunity to learn a little and probably the brain that will ache is my brain  :-\  but that's OK, no pain, no gain  :)  (or was that from the gym?)

That's one thing that I learned when I began in computers: you don't need to know everything... is enough to know the phone number of the people who knows  :) (know how to use PM is new but equally important  ;D  )

An idea flashed my brain! :o How about an Iced-Latte with IceWM only? It would be easier to support, wouldn't it? :D :D

An IceWM Latte is a good idea but I started to think in the RAW version and I see endless possibilities of learning and making very personal remasters.

Is it work attracting me?  :o   I need breakfast  :)

I smell chilaquiles and coffee from the kitchen, just put Winter Reflections from boyz II men  kids are decorating the Christmas tree, going to help.
