Hi Jase,

Is is likely that Openbox would be the only non DE providing the possibility to use pipe-menus, or do you know of other non DE providing the same type of feature ?

I have a little question about the way you write, which I find difficult to understand:

After a pair of years reading daily here, I kind of start getting the whole idea... however, could you try to do better ? Else than myself, first finding painful to decrypt your words, there are plenty persons who doesn't have learned English as their native mother's language. I would not have noticed if it would be one word or exceptional, but I notice you look like you tend to "let it go". So, I would thank you for an effort... :/

Hi Hootie,

I really enjoy your compilation - You know I do.  Still having a smile on my face every time I start that IceWM version I now use as my working desktop.

However .... with the new PCLinuxOS policy of radically doing away with the 32-bit install on all fronts - what sense does it make to have a light install.  Surely most, if not all PCs with 64bit capability would be able to run the main DE and even more XFCE and LXDE (and Gnome 3 if one really must).  Why having OpenBox, wmii, IceWM etc still in the mix?  The only good reason I can come up with is for sentimental reasons.  That is fair enough, so.

I assure you, until I am pushed out of here I will enjoy your creation up to the last moment and have live dvds at the ready to sometimes look at it again - for sentimental reasons...

It does make sense : many machines out there, which are old (let's say more than 2 years old) will continue working well during many years (if some people are able to provide Operating Systems else than bloat-win7-win8) (remember the "bloat-people" joke ? ). It also does make sense to have a large choice of all setup distributions having PCLinuxOS as a base, would it only be to get more people joining the community.

I have not yet taken all the time I would have wanted to try more deeply Iced Latte (or even Taco's Astronomy), but I am impressed by the speed of that version, and wonder if it is not even as fast as a Puppy or ToutoutLinux ?

"Fast as a Puppy Linux"  is exactly what I was thinking when requesting a smaller iso for copy2ram.  The applications selection has to be very small front end oriented.

Ther will always be a need for a lighter desktop - or the availability of a lighter desktop, I have not used a DE for quite some time now, preferring to use a  window manager - I don't normally have any decoration - as I tend to use euclid-wm and have no need for a wallpaper, or clock or monitor tec, If i need to know system temp's I use acpi -V  if I need to monitor them i set up a small saidar window, as  use weechat fo rirc and that is up nearly all the time - I use the clock there - this is the kind of situ that lead me to use the lighter apps.

As for the differences of a "Light32" and a "Light64" set up, again that is scalable - I would probably still use teh same apps personally, although i would have a different app-set in a LiveCD -  IF I end up doing a -Light for the 64bit (less call it "4shot Espresso") it would be centered on minimalism  but the app choice is wider and may involve being made lighter via the environment that is available - the choice of windowmanagers would be smaller etc. I am not actually convinced there is a need for a "PCLinuxOS-Light" in 64bit form (as there is a need for it in 32bit for) as the mini's serve that purpose for those power houses.

The question about if PCLinuxOS-Light (Iced Latte) future, A lot will come down to the decisions that lay ahead, so I will stay quiet on this for now, as long as 32bit is developed and supported - I will look at maintaining -light or I may change my focus on to packaging (gotta learn it yet).

It would be great to see this iso less than 200mb for copy2ram purposes.

I have the under lying engine (non-X part) as well tuned as possible , to remove anything will actually slow down the beast, PCLinxuOS is not designed to be a Small iso - although you can make it very light in use via services, configuration etc

All to often people make the mistake that Small = Light, and there is a sweet spot - a balance between size and speed and usefulness  - that I hope I have IcedLatte at the right place- I also made anither iso that I called mX that is faster and a abit smaller but is not really useful or productive.

I didn't see this is beta and installed in the nettop that has an Atom 230, 1 GB RAM and Nvidia ION graphics. Is fast and beautiful, my only problem is: the new applications doesn't show in the menus.

I guess I'll have to wait until is done, in the meantime I think is a great work in an area where this is really needed. Thank you for your effort.

This could be done by hand if needed.  The file to be edited is "menu" in ~/.icewm .

The syntax is

prog name of your program youricon command

So for Gimp it would be

prog "Gimp 2.6" gimp gimp

provided that gimp is the name of your icon in you icon directory.  You define your icon directory in your file "preferences" in ~/.icewm . Search for a line starting with:

IconPath=

and change it to

IconPath=/home/crow/icewm_icons

or whatever you prefer.

post install please open a terminal and type the following

xdg_menu -v && update-menus -v

this will bring all the menu's up to date

Thanks for the kind words,

One of the caveats of not using a DE is that some of the things that  DE does has to be done semi-manually.

Most of the WM's on light that have Menuing systems update their menus on start up, this means that the best way to update the menus is to restart the WM - this can be done by clicking on the "restart icewm" option (or the equivalent in the other WMs)

If this does not work then using the xdg_menu -v && update-menus -v then clicking the restart WM option will.
