I'm not running cairo-dock. I am trying to run AWN i.e. Avant Window Navigator

edit: apparently there is another problem with AWN. Logout won't logout with AWN running. You have to quit AWN manually first. Maybe I should forget about AWN  :D ;D

Did you try lxpanel?  Always my rescue in cases like this

JWM is in working by a different dev as far as I know .... or so the roamer goes.  It is work in progress ....

I haven't tried lxpanel. I kind of like AWN for a number of reasons but it does have a lot of dependencies. As far as JWM Jase had mentioned it previously and I did get a PCLOS .iso with it included but it was a while ago and I forget which one.  ??? ;D

Hey Jase,

first, nice job, trying it now. I have a question about Synaptic. I can't resize it or change the fonts, and there are no window buttons. any ideas?

thanks ahead of time.

edit: I forgot. AWN doesn't seem to recognize that xcompmgr is running. where do you start xcomp? thanks

LKJ,

Thanks, you will find xcompmgr started in ~/.fluxbox/startup as xcompmgr -f -c -C & you may need to add another flag (or remove one) for AWN to function correctly.

The problem is that the cairo is told to use opengl.
<snip>
Andy

Andy,

its only xcompmgr included  - no cairodock stuff..

just curious Jase, what happened to JWM?

As much as I like JWM , I loathe how its configured - way to much xml stuff, and the menu has to be manually generated as opposed to using something like xdg_menu --format blackbox  --fullmenu >/location/of/blackbox/menu

Sproggy loves XML (I believe it may be his second name) and I think he may be playing with JWM

I have however added some keybindingd to both icewm and fluxbox - you will find them in the keys file within the wm dot.file

Synaptic fonts will be fixed on teh final - I think I may have them set in settings - preferences - application font to a particular size.

There are a good selection of tradtional/reparenting window managers along with tiling managers like wmii and euclid, ratpoison really is something different (like an X version of "screen") and won't appeal to many but it certainly is a powerfully simple wm.

Thanks for the feedback and i hope to get more from you and anybody else

Jase

Hi,

I am in the Live Vbox. It's a very fast version. I noticed the gtk theme well configured, it shows in the matchbox-window-manager at boot.

I used the command line to update the menus. I get messages with errors, maybe some could benefit of corrections ?

I'll try to copy the output here:
Code: [Select]
WARNING: '/etc/xdg/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu' does not exist

There are many messages, and this is not easy to copy, so for this time I will retain this one only.

I also have a suggest for now : could you put a menu shorcut to PCC and Synaptic in the main right-click menu ? That would be very nice.

I'll be back when I will have more.

Regards,
Mélodie

PS: the full output is here : http://pastebin.com/dFzjapv1 . This time I have configured the video first, so instead of having a tiny destkop I could open the menus more comfortably and see the Sakura terminal in the terminals list. What can be these "unknown layout" messages about ?

Melodie,

That file does not exist in an Openbox installation, either.

Mel,

xdg_menu is a cross-desktop environment directory specification, and in some ways it is "dumb" in its approach - especially when used in just a window manager only  - with xdg_menu it will generate menu information for all the installed windowmanager menu styles, and update-menus -v will rite to teh appropriate menu file. if it does not know the window manager (like euclid-wm /ratpoison/nwm/wmii - ie those without menuing systems) it will say that it does not understand the environment, the kde message is simply that kde is not installed on the iso so it cant generate the menu item...

Hi,

Thanks for the detailed explanations. I get it slightly better now. I suppose you plan to make these commands automated and transparent at login time for the final ?

This is the proposed release iso , te menu's will update post "restartwm command"  as approriate for reach windowmanager (ie after using synaptic to install any given app) in a wm only situ - you need to reload its config by either logging out and logging in or using the restartwm function located in most menu systems, this is (afaik)standard in non-DE installs.

Hi Jase,

Is is likely that Openbox would be the only non DE providing the possibility to use pipe-menus, or do you know of other non DE providing the same type of feature ?

I have a little question about the way you write, which I find difficult to understand:

«This is the proposed release iso , te menu's will update post "restartwm command"  as approriate for reach windowmanager (ie after using synaptic to install any given app) in a wm only situ - you need to reload its config by either logging out and logging in or using the restartwm function located in most menu systems, this is (afaik)standard in non-DE installs.»

After a pair of years reading daily here, I kind of start getting the whole idea... however, could you try to do better ? Else than myself, first finding painful to decrypt your words, there are plenty persons who doesn't have learned English as their native mother's language. I would not have noticed if it would be one word or exceptional, but I notice you look like you tend to "let it go". So, I would thank you for an effort... :/

Regards,
Mélodie
