My last hurra for the evening - I promise ....

Numlock is of when starting iceWM - and I hate it.  Try to press numbers .... oh man ....

So in order to have numlock running on startup create the following file in /home/usr/.icewm :

startup

In the file type as follows:

Code: [Select]
#!/bin/sh
/usr/bin/enable_X11_numlock &

All done.  Log in - log out and off you go.

Have a good night.

Right - I have used that IceWM part of Hooties beta.  I have driven it forwards and backwards.  I have done stupid things with it, was trying to break it, mix it with other stuff from other desktop environments, shake it, steer it, kick it, abuse it ....

It's till standing - and looking beautiful to boot:

I made it my working install and I don't want to let go of it!  This beta better be up-datable, Hootie, otherwise you'll have a revolution on your hands.   ;D

Three hurrays for this one - very well done!!   :D

Thanks longtom, there is nothing in this release that will cause breakage on updates I was looking to do some configuration updates (keybindings on some of the window mangers ) although I may cover that in tips threads here instead.

the only change I have made to the iso was to add wmctrl and the xdg_utils (which atm are not working with this install as they do not understand the environment) xdg_menu and update menus work fine in all the environments that use menus

I am looking to have wbar or perhaps the lxde-panel available but not active by default (to save start up resources)

I am yet to attemt an install then add in a task-kde or similar to see if the result works.

This beta is effectively a RC

Ok I have hit a slight issue, with the latest update on xxxterm, it has become very unstable with flash content, causing a lock-up of the browser

I have (after trouble shooting and testing other browsers ) logged this at xxxterm's flyspray site as a bug.

I had not picked up on this previously as I normally block flash content.

So while I await confirmation (as Linux flash compatibility is not big on their schedule) I am looking  for an interim solution

One thought I had was to include the seamonkey suite as a replacement for xxxterm/webkit/xchat/sylpheed although I am unconvinced on how quick/usable that would be on a p2 with 128 megs of ram (I will test later today on such a machine)

other thoughts are to replace xxxterm with another web browser - although neither jumanji or surf are "traditional" in appearance and usage to appeal to the average user and I am not yet convinced that midori is right as it draws in further dependencies via vala.

at the moment I am "blinded" buy the options

Thoughts please?

edit : Andy - Firefox is not an option at this time

my two cents are there aren't many small/tiny browsers that appeal to the average user. I think the ones that are the easiest to use are Chromium, FF and Opera and I assume all are too big for what you are looking for.

edit: Chromium has flash built in.

LKJ,

Thanks for your reply

The three browsers you mention all take up more ram than -Light does when idling after boot.

the big feature of xxxterm is it mixes traditional gui within a light framework and is blazing fast even on a p2 with 128 megs of RAM, seamonkey runs lighter than the likes of firefox but is still more resource hungry than your typical webkit browser.

Being a user who likes is stuff comfortable (as in - as I used to work) I was still taken by Jumanji, also it envolves using a couple of keyboard shortcuts.  I still use it in conjunction with other browsers.
Flash is not a problem, nor is downloading.  The configuration files, also not used in conjunction with a gui, are easy to understand and workable with any editor.

Going for a project where P2 computers are involved with as little as 128megs of ram you will be hard pressed to find anything even as functional as midori to get to work, since these browsers are just not laid out for PCs like that any more.

I would assume that anybody trying to use a barebones iso is also prepared to edit an easy editable config file.  So for the time being my money would be on Jumanji.

you're probably right. and I don't think the average user would be using a bare bones .iso. I think someone who has a PC with very limited resources has to learn quickly how to do what they need to do to make the thing usable. I tend to think of the average user as someone like my mom, who doesn't know the difference between an .iso and isotoners.  ;D

OK explored the seamonkey idea and its a go go.

My proposed alternative is  to utilise part of an early pre-PCLinuxOS Hammer script I have that accepts given web url as an argument (a youtube video address for example), and then use this as a temporary work around until xxxterm is fixed for flash playing.

there are benefits to using this as it can then be used for "webapps"  like having a persistent gmail or gmxmail window open.

Will explore this tonight and post the script for testing.
