I too was greeted by the update prompt but it did not proceed to update automatically.

I used to think that the update options were removed during packaging. I have seen that earlier versions of Firefox installed from the repositories had the Check for update option greyed out / removed. I did not check with FF 4 though.

Can anybody who still has 3.x installed from our repositories confirm this?

My thoughts were that since we were only installing / updating from repositories, this was done to prevent conflicts with the regular update process.
If possible, it would be better to set the Firefox update option to disabled and only allow add-on update checking while preparing the package. That would save a lot of such incidents for the already hassled packagers.

Packaging well will cure headaches of many :) But learning to package will cause headaches in many :(

Oh carp!  I updated using Synaptic and now have Firefox 6.  Frankly Scarlet, I don't give a dam except that THIS update broke my link between Thunderbird and FF (AGAIN!).   Searching though all past posts is a royal pain and I still have consecutive senior moments (meaning I don't remember at all and it's probably in that Polish thread that I can't read).  Does anyone how to fix this? I like to click on things in TB and have them open in FF.  Doesn't seem like a lot to ask.

Oh gawd - I feel like Rosanna Rosanna Danna - NEVER MIND. The "the fix" seems to be to simply ignore the fact that in preferences/options where it says that FF is your default browser - don't believe it and check anyhow.  Doing so it told me it wasn't, so I told it it should be and it works now.  ::)

LOL...

Was it this one? :D...

I just tested on a partition that hasn't been updated. All Firefox does when you launch it is tell you that your Firefox is out of date and offers the ability to download the Firefox 6.0 tar.bz file. It does not install diddly.

Giving prompts about what's available is far different from hijacking/installing your system with updates.

I've also known people complain when updates were available and they missed them coz "the app didn't tell me"

Go figure

Thanks Andy. My senior moments day was yesterday - today I could find the one I was thinking of. Just as well I didn't find it yesterday though. I would have probably gone messing everything up.

I think it was this one. Of course it links to yours ;D

Strange behaviour from FF here so ......  the autoupdate box was apparently ticked ...  not something I did .....  and FF updated itself - it told me - to Ver 6  yesterday or the day before (not sure) as I do not use it as my default browser.

Today I got the ver 6 updates from the repository .....  and having read this thread I unticked the auto update option.

Which all makes me wonder what FF actually checks ......  if it cannot actually update itself ....  which reports that it is updated ....  weird ....
