firefox update warnings
« on: August 16, 2011, 03:52:58 PM »
I have been running Firefox 5.0.1 just fine. Today when I opened Firefox it started doing a automatic update to version 6.0

I guess several questions comes to mind

1st and foremost, why is it doing an "automatic" update?  In preferences it is set to ask when there are updates to Firefox. So what use are the settings in preferences if they ignore my settings? That is pure BS!

2nd now that they have saw fit to update my version of Firefox it now tells me

I was/am running flash 10.3 r181

I thought Synaptic was the right way to update my machine!  According to synaptic Firefox 5.0.1 and flash 10.3 r181 are current.

So why did firefox update me to 6.0 as indicated in the troubleshooting information

Name            Firefox
Version          6.0
User Agent     Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:6.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/6.0

How can I make sure that Firefox DOES NOT update automatically at the developers whim? And perhaps breaking things such as plugins that I use?   This is my machine not theirs, I want control over my machine!!!

By the way my machine is fully updated as this morning.

...............we need more info.   ;) ;) ;)

(If you are dual booting with a MS o/s) - - - maybe MS has devised a methodology to infiltrate the LINUX code?   ::)

lions, tigers, bears - O my!    :o

....seriously,     i remember reading somewhere {many moons ago}-  about FF autoupdating in linux same as windows...maybe it's time has come. ???

Time will tell....and for now the FLASH is separated from the updated browser due to our proprietary packages.... ::)

Not sure what more information that I can give you?  No I DO NOT do anything with other steaming pile of an OS  :o
If I wanted my web browser to act like something from that other OS, I would just run that OS!  If they can not make ones web browsing experience better, than they should just leave things ALONE!

By the way Nice picture!  :D

Firefox 6.0 was sent to the repos this morning along with flash update too. The flash message will go away when you get your flash update.

flash-player-plugin-10.3.183.5-1pclos2011.i586.rpm

I don't believe Firefox cannot update automatically unless you have apt update enabled in the PCLinuxOS Control Center. It does not have write access to /usr/lib/firefox-xx folder unless you run as root.

Today firefox offered to install an updated version. I declined. This happened several times. (Persistant buggers!)
I checked in Synaptic and found updates for firefox and flash plugin. Installed them and when next I booted up, no more requests from firefox to update. :D :D

I have never saw this message YouCanToo but that's probably because I have upgraded firefox along with flash player plugin in one go.

Do You have flash player plugin pinned in the synaptic so it ignores upgrades by any chance?

What I saw today - which is a reason why i have decided to join this thread was the pop up on my fiance's machine that was inviting Her to upgrade Firefox to the version 6. It was a firefox popup...

Never saw it before but I am glad I saw it first.

I was sure I have the "Check for firefox upgrades" disabled... My lady is usually asking me about stuff like this BUT any other user that is less cautious... may end up with messed up browser...

Just my 2 cents.

Hello YCT, in reference to your comment above (in red text)...the reason it is set to "ask when there are updates to Firefox" is because "Firefox" is check-marked under "Automatically check for udates to:" in preferences>advanced>update. Un-check the firefox option. I noticed this setting when we upgraded from Fx4.x to 5.x so I un-checked the "update firefox" box then. I guess we will have to double-check update settings with each new version of Firefox to make sure that option is un-checked.

I just tested on a partition that hasn't been updated. All Firefox does when you launch it is tell you that your Firefox is out of date and offers the ability to download the Firefox 6.0 tar.bz file. It does not install diddly.

Even that being true, it still ignored the ask me what I wanted to do first and just installed the damn thing.  That is not acceptable!  I will be sure that double check it. As one can see under the Troubleshooting information one can see it shows the version as 6.0

I did see that when I got around to updating some other machines that I manage for some other folks.

Normally I update my systems once per week, through Synaptic. This machine was updated very early this morning (about 3am). When I turned it back on about 1pm this afternoon I was greeted that it was updating Firefox. When it did it's thing under Help -> About it shows Firefox 6.0 and I got the page telling me flash was outdated. Before this I was running Firefox 5.0.1 with Flash at version 10.3 r181

Glad someone else has seen it, at least I know I am not totally crazy.  Well I guess that is open to debate too  :o

This is what my setting show now. Is there any other spot that need to be changes to insure that the browser is never automatically updated?

Oh carp!  I updated using Synaptic and now have Firefox 6.  Frankly Scarlet, I don't give a dam except that THIS update broke my link between Thunderbird and FF (AGAIN!).   Searching though all past posts is a royal pain and I still have consecutive senior moments (meaning I don't remember at all and it's probably in that Polish thread that I can't read).  Does anyone how to fix this? I like to click on things in TB and have them open in FF.  Doesn't seem like a lot to ask.

Oh gawd - I feel like Rosanna Rosanna Danna - NEVER MIND. The "the fix" seems to be to simply ignore the fact that in preferences/options where it says that FF is your default browser - don't believe it and check anyhow.  Doing so it told me it wasn't, so I told it it should be and it works now.  ::)
