VLC problem
« on: August 16, 2011, 02:50:47 PM »
I run a HP Compaq Presario with 2G of memory, latest to the minute version of KDE, all software updated through Synaptic, 23" Asus LCD monitor.

The Good: Most programs run fine, fast, and look great.

The Bad:   The Cursor disappears when clicking on any menu item or buttons such as the Bold button on the screen where I am writing this topic. The arrow does reappear when the Cursor is moved. Is this some sort of X  problem. I run the latest version on synaptic. I know this is only sort of bad.

The Ugly:  When using the VLC media player or the PCLOS FLV and MP4 and converter,  click on the "Quit" under File or the "X" in the upper right corner causes the following to occur:

  • A black blank screen is briefly displayed, then
  • KDE immediately drops back to log screen.
  • Login proceeds normally and the standard desktop is displayed;and,
  • All open programs have been closed.

Oh, I will be switching to the MiniMe version and the LiveCD versions show the same behavior. I am currently using VLC a lot to view the tutorials for Qt and it is a real drag to put up with this.

Any ideas would be most welcome. I have searched all the boards on this forum as well.

So any suggestions would be most welcome.

I will be sticking with PCLOS, no change there. I have heard of other Flash media viewers but nothing like PCLOS FLV and MP4 and converter.

the problems you describe seems to be related to your video card

give us more information about the laptop to know the video card you have there

it could be a problem of wrong driver in use

are you using compiz or kde desktop effects?

if that information is correct, the problem is the via driver

other users reported it on the forum

can't remember solutions to their problems

I also checked my Compiz and KDE. The system says that "Desktop effects are not available on this system for the following reasons:" with no other information. And I do not use any KDE special effects. Actually, Compiz and desktop effects are just a distraction to me, especially when programming or writing.

Chisum,

Your vlc config files may be borked. Try doing this. Look in your home directory for the hidden folder .config. Open the .config folder and rename vlc folder to vlc-temp or vlc-old or something similar. Then try again.

I just found this thread.

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,95346.0.html

We VIA users need some serious help with this issues. Please read the whole thread. I hope this will be a great example of why PCLOS is the best distro. By the way my machine is a desktop rig no a laptop.

Are you able to tweak the VIA video output, as per that thread?

1. I renamed the VLC config folder

2. Ran VLC and I could quit and check the 'X' and the program quick safely.

3. But when I run  a video file, it immediately shows the same behavior and drops back  to the KDE log in screen.

Please describe more about tweaking the VIA thread.

Chisum,

I'm referring to the thread you linked to, specifically the last post in that thread: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,95346.msg806657.html#msg806657

"I've done a clean install from from the KDE PClinuxOS 2011.06, and after a littlebit of tweaking the resolution is fine, the display works.
Re-installing is no problem, it's my spare machine, and no important data on it.

If I do a full update (synaptic) some 258 packages are installed, but after the reboot, there is no way to log in, I can't get to a working desktop.

After that I re-installed the same release again, and did a full update again, this time I unmarked the openchromedriver update, leaving the openchrome 0.2.904-4PCLOS2011, and not upgrading to openchrome-20110523-1pclos. After the reboot everything works fine."

He goes on to say that if he does the video upgrade, he has no GUI, etc.

I just checked back in the Control Center on the Via configuration. I had previously stated that all options were checked except the "Disable key..." item. There is an item under that I am going to test.

Graphic card options

Item Checked = Enagle Translucency (Composite extension)

So, I am going to uncheck it and sees what happens.

The other options do not seem to relate, one is for hardware accelerated mouse pointer and the other option starts xorg upon booting.

kde without translucency looks weird, don't remember if it works or not

i mentioned a video card change, have you considered it?

the card you have is really slow, anything you put to replace it will be a benefit for you

Is there some way  of doing this through Synaptic. I thought there was and I will check on it. I am going to Minime me anyway. The Qt Creator effort is really useless. I will post more on that tomorrow. My goal with the new install is to build a stable multi-programming environment, perhaps even playing with some FORTRAN and LISP from the old days. But primarily focused on the total Qt environment including the source.
