I have jumped through a lot of hoops myself with similar problems, and yes, using Win7 to run chkdsk /f was far and away the easiest solution for me. I'm pretty sure this problem could be fixed with Linux tools, but the learning curve could be a steep price to pay, depending totally on panamahat, of course.

i was reading and supposedly trinity rescue cd has chkdsk to fix the partition,also ubcdwin, ubcd5.1 and hirens has it(good luck trying to find it)

but after this long post i think that the hard disk could be failing and the app could be useless here
