ms_meme is here
« on: August 15, 2011, 04:50:10 AM »
Why is ms_meme in this topic I hear you all cry
Can't she go elsewhere her nonsense to apply
Could she be here to snoop and on us to spy
Or maybe she's bein' social and just droppin' by

Yesterday I had nothing to do and felt a little spry
With lots and lots of help Phoenix I decided to try
And I'm here now a lookin' for an ally
'Cause when I start a messin' I want nothing to go awry

KDE  KDE  KDE ...

Yessi'r m'am ... I know where my corner is. :)

Seriously, ms_meme ... it's good time that you try Xfce out. I am certain are going to learn more from this outstanding DE.

OK ... Curiosity. Why is it Xfce and not Xfde??

It used to mean

"XForms Common Environment"  and was written  XFCE

but now has no meaning and is written Xfce

Quote
Olivier Fourdan started the project in 1996.[5] The name "Xfce" originally stood for "XForms Common Environment", but since that time Xfce has been rewritten twice and no longer uses the XForms toolkit. The name survived, but it is no longer capitalized as "XFCE", but rather as "Xfce". The developers' current stance is that the initialism no longer stands for anything specific.

I haven't given up on KDE on my main install of / and /home.  It's still there.  But I have another
partition with just / and Xfce is now there.

Everything was going well with KDE until a few months ago and then got pretty sluggish.  Even changing
Kernels wasn't a big help.  I was doing a lot of waiting.  Somehow I don't think I have much time
left to wait.  ::)

It has been suggested that my machine just isn't that powerful to handle the new KDE stuff. I tried
Xfce  from the USB drive and things looked good. I know more than ever I am a creature of habit as I keep
clicking or looking for things and they aren't there.  :P

I haven't done the initial Updating.  I guess I do that next?

I didn't put this ISO on the USB or do the installing by myself.  I once again depended on a member who
never fails me.  He is probably in the local pub recovering from the nightmare of helping me.

LOL @ Just19!

I tried Phoenix and yes I enjoyed it a lot BUT there are certain things that were a problem for me...

a) xfce power manager - it does not work fully and the fix that I came up could be dangerous for battery or so I hear...
b) in thunar and other windows the toolbar icons are HUGGGEEE and it looks rather poor on my older gear with 1024x768 and I have found no way to change that
c) if You want to use Sproggy's beautiful themes for xfce the bar with the label on the top of the window is quite biggg too.

I have managed to solve problem a with gnome power manager but it did not make me very happy coz I wanted to use native xfce app for power management. I have changed the theme for xfce and that solved the problem c... but it did not make me happy coz I really enjoyed Sproggy's graphics... I never managed to solve problem b. I even tried to install KDE4 and then install the xfce on top of it - toolbar was still huge.

I am still considering which of the de's will I use on my notsopowerfull lappy... Every DE I have tried has it's pros and cons... can't make up my mind.

Just thought I would share this here.

Thanks.

Andy

I have had my first kink.

An hour ago I did the first Upgrade in Synaptic.  It took less than 5 minutes to get them.  Then came the announcement the the changes were being made.  And the little bars started going across and back and forth to show that this was happening.  After a few minutes it stopped but was not complete.  It stayed that way for over 10 minutes.  Then it started up again.

Now it has stopped again.  And this time has been sitting on the same thing for over 40 minutes.  There has been no movement for that time.

So I am wondering what to do.

While I was waiting for an answer, I left the room.  I just came back and the whole screen was black.  No mouse wiggling would bring it up.  I couldn't see anything but black screen.  No where to go.  I could not use any keys to relog or reboot.  Only thing I could do was manually turn off the computer.  I restarted and am reporting from KDe install.

(While I was in XFCE, FF was giving trouble also.)  I will wait again before rebooting to XFCE.  Perhaps the directions will be different now.

Are you volunteering to write it up?  Parnote is always looking for ideas.  You need to submit it in the Magazine Topic.  :P

When I get to the part and click on Mark all Upgrades, it tells me the broken packages must be fixed first.
