Epson all in one scanner and virtualbox

Hi, I have an Epson Stylus DX4450, which prints nicely, but it is a known fact that Linux won't let it scan. I've tried the various suggestions on the net for drivers from epkowa, avasys, iscan etc to no avail. So I thought I'd have a go at using the printer / scanner through Virtualbox, I have Win7 installed on an external usb disk drive. On inserting the Epson system disk, it seems to install correctly, but I assume it installs on the internal HDD? This is of course no good for Win7 in Vb, as it's physically on a different disk. When I'm in Vb (Win7) I can't see the external disk itself - unless Win thinks it's the c: drive, in which case I can't see the internal disk. Confused? So am I. Btw, the scanner worked perfectly under Win7 before I saw the light and changed to Pclos. It pains me to have to resort back to Win just to get my scanner working.

The first step you need to perform is to enable virtualbox to "see" the usb scanner, while the scanner is connected open virtualbox
goto Settings -> USB and add a filter for your USB scanner.
This way the scanner become visible to your guest Win7.



From my image you can see i.e. my Sonix webcam, in your case you should see your USB scanner ...

About driver installation, you need to install the driver on the same disk where you have installed Win7, the correct terms should be "virtual disk", not matter if it's an internal or external storage.

Your virtualbox guest (win7) normally should see only the "virtual disk", unless you explicitly enable some storage to be visible
(by means of samba or by shared folders ....)

And yes, from inside win7 you should see C: and that is the place where to install the scanner driver.

Hi, I saw your post about this printer/scanner on another page, and thought I might have some information that would help you. I use Epson printers also, and at present have a RX680 that works perfectly under PClinuxOS. I also have an Artisan810 that doesn't. I have found on the avasys site the source file for this driver, it also includes the driver for your DX4250.
I am going to request this driver on the package request page. Thought you might like to ask also. Tex and the gang are very responsive to our asking.
Then you can use the AIO directly in PClinuxOS.

I have an Epson Stylus CX5800F for which there are no Linux scanner drivers available, so have no choice but to use the VB solution. I have a Win2K VM in which I installed the CD supplied Windows drivers. The images below are of the Epson Windows scanner app.

The results of a new Preview;



The scanned image opened in MGI PhotoSuite on the Windows VM;

This actually works very well, with a minimum of fuss and bother. I'd prefer a Linux driver for the unit, but at least this gets the job done without purchasing a whole new unit.

Might as well finish the mind blowing experience.  





This is the last Windows version I legally own, given to me by a M$ representative for attending a seminar one week before the official release of Windows 2000. All the Windows software I own runs on Win95/98 or Win2K. It's perfect for a VM as there is no activation, no false positives saying the OS is a pirated copy like WinXP, and because this is a corporate Win2K Pro, no 25 digit key to enter when installing.

I don't browse the Internet from within the Win2K VM, so I don't particularly worry about malware; Internet browsing is done from the PCLinuxOS host. If I actually had a need for something from the Internet in the VM, I can d/l it in the host and pass it to the VM through the shared folder. As is, all I use it for at present is the scanner.

Below image shows the shared directories mapped as network drives F: and K:. The Removable Disk E: is the built in card reader of the Epson all-in-one unit.
