Need an all-in-one printer which actually scans
« on: August 11, 2011, 11:57:16 AM »
Hi all, anyone recommend an all-in-one printer which actually scans? The reason I ask is, my Epson Stylus DX4450 prints, copies (for which I don't need a pc) but steadfastly refuses to scan. It's a known problem, I won't mention in public that I've even tried installing the relevant software outside synaptic, 'cos I know I'll get my wrist slapped, so I've now decided to bite the bullet and shell out for a new one. So who has an all-in-one which works with pclos? It needs to be cheap (really cheap) and preferably with separate colour cartridges.

As an aside, I suppose I couldn't ask on this forum for any help getting the windo$e drivers supplied on the disk to work with virtualbox? No, didn't think so...

Looking at sane-project supported devices: http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-EPSON
there are two all-in-one:

DX4400: supported by the epkowa backend plus non-free interpreter
DX4450: Probably unsupported

... but both scanners are identified from the same USB ID: 0x04b8/0x083f

I would not be surprised if the scanner is exactly the same and therefore supported from the same drivers ...

For sure questions about virtualbox are allowed, may a be a separate thread is preferable.  ;)

Thanks for the reply. I have tried the supposedly supported epkowa / sane / avasys etc sites for drivers / software, got totally confused by which bits I need to download and install, and basically have given up hope of ever getting the Epson to work as a scanner with pclos. Trawling the net (Google is my friend) I see other users have had much the same problem, no one anywhere on the planet seems to have got the Epson and Linux to talk to each other, not even those clever people whose OS rhymes with You-bun-two. I'll start a new thread with the Virtualbox question.

Worth checking the PCLOS wiki section on hardware and looking at the Printer section -

My own printer has a scanner which works fine in PCLOS (it is the HP Photosmart C4680)

I would suggest that those two are mutually exclusive.

Most HP multifunction devices work out of box.

I am presently using a real cheap wireless model .....  Deskjet_3050_J610 ..... and even the scanning works over wireless.

There is a HP site which details the supported devices.

FWIW, I use nothing but Epson's and have had not one bit of a problem getting them to work. Currently I an using the CX4800 series.  I see from another post here http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php?topic=89884.0 that there were several suggestion made whic I did not see a reply for, Did you try them, If so what were your results. Also searching I see that the program iScan will work. You will not find iScan in the Repositories as it is a paid for piece of software.  Hove you checked at the Open Printing Org website here www.openprinting.org

Update, I stand corrected, I see that there are iscan drivers listed in the repository.

Thanks for all the replies. Firstly let me say another thank you to those of you who have also read my other two or three threads on the same subject with a slight twist; I have tried solutions on the other pages but keep coming up against a brick wall. Seems HP is the way to go, but first I'll persevere with downloading the correct drivers AGAIN and seeing if I can get them installed, or using Virtualbox. Of course then I'll have to figure a way of saving any scans to a folder which both Vb and Gnome can see. I haven't yet marked anything as solved 'cos I'm still looking at that wall...
