Here's the output from ls -l /usr/lib/libhpmud.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 Aug 16 22:25 /usr/lib/libhpmud.so -> /usr/lib/libhpmud.so.0*
and the kernel version is:
2.6.38.8-pclos1.bfs
Here's an update - When the multifunction machine was connected to my desktop PC via USB, several messages popped up at the lower right corner of the screen (I'm running KDE) saying "missing printer driver" and "install printer driver". I went to the PCC and clicked on "set up the printer" and after the printer was set up, I went to "set up the scanner", set it up and that permitted me to scan via a USB connection! Next I connected the printer to my network and both the printer and scanner set up using PCC on the network! I shut down the printer and PC several times and the connection held so I may be out of the woods. It looks like creating the soft link solved the problem. Thanks for all your help -
