HP M1212n no longer scans
« on: August 10, 2011, 01:39:28 PM »
Hello - After a recent update (not sure which one) my HP M1212n multifunction machine stopped scanning.

When I launch Xsane the program seems to start normally with the little splash screen appearing & disappearing, and then after a few seconds a small box appears on the screen with this message:

Error
Failed to open device 'hpa10:net/HP_Laserjet_Professional_M1212nf_MFP/zc=NP1820AA2:
error during device IO

I tried running xsane from a terminal to see if I get any useful output but none appears and it doesn't matter which user I'm logged on as.

I've tried to scan with the M1212n connected via Ethernet and USB with the same results.  I'm running PCLOS 2011 KDE fully updated with kernel 2.6.38.8-pclos1.bfs

I searched this forum and the internet for clues but came up dry, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks -

I'm not familiar with that model. But, most scanners have a panel button you can push to manually start a scan. Check your scanner manual for it, or try pushing buttons to see if the process will start on the scanner. If you believe the hardware is functioning correctly, try the simple-scan package available in Synaptic.

djohnston thanks for the reply.  I checked the machine and there are dedicated buttons for maintenance, faxing, and copying but no button for scanning.

In the past I've always scanned by putting the machine online, and starting xsane  From there I was presented with all sorts of choices for scanning (manual feed/automatic feed, resolution, color/b&w, etc)  It worked extremely well and then one day it stopped.

I will install simple-scan and report back

Thanks -

Also, install task-scanning if you haven't done so already. Make sure it installs the hplip-common package.

I just checked and task-scanning and hplip-common are already installed.

I installed simple-scan and when I run it I get a similar error:
Unable to connect to scanner

And when I run simple-scan from a terminal I get this output:
** (simple-scan:20622): WARNING **: Unable to get open device: Error during device I/O

Any ideas?

Is that a networked device? This is what I can think of. Is CUPS server not blocked in firewall? Is package sane-backends installed? Have you tried setting up the scanner again in PCC? Have you looked at the logs in /var/log/cups and /var/log/daemon directories?

If this is a USB device, what are the results of entering lsusb in a terminal?

That device is networked, and  I have no problem printing to it from 3 PCs on my network, 2 PCs running PCLOS and a win xp machine.  I can scan with the win xp PC using the HP software that came with the machine, but I'm not able to scan from either of the PCLOS machines.

My firewall is set to Allow Everything (No Firewall)

I tried setting up the scanner again in PCC and when I click on Set up Scanner in PCC, the Please wait box pops up for a few seconds and then I get the message:
The following scanner
  -  Hewlett-Packard HP_LaserJet_Professional_M1212nf_MFP all-in-one
is available on your system.

Sane-backends was installed, but I re-installed it just to be sure but it still won't scan.

As far as the logs, I'm not sure what I should be looking for.

Thanks for your help -

I don't know how much validity this error message has, so let's find out:

"warning: Version: (cups-config) Not available. Unable to determine installed version of CUPS.)
warning: /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file not found or not accessible."

In a terminal, do:

ls -l /etc/cups/cupsd.conf

IF the file exists, then do:

su -
cat /etc/cups/cupsd.conf

and post the output.

Here's the output from cat /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
Code: [Select]

so I guess the file exists, here the output from cat /etc/cups/cupsd.conf (as root):

I don't have a networked printer. Mine is a simple HP Deskjet connected via parallel port. (Yeah, it's an old one.) Anyway, most troubleshooting is a process of elimination. If the problem is known, possible causes of the problem can be systematically eliminated. Seems like this one is running the gamut of possible causes.

Maybe we've been looking at this the wrong way. You said,
Quote
After a recent update (not sure which one) my HP M1212n multifunction machine stopped scanning.

Let's take a look at what packages were installed recently. As root user, use a file browser to go to the /root/.synaptic/log directory. (.synaptic is a hidden folder, so you'll need to unhide files and folders in the file browser.) In that directory, there will be log files named by date and time. They're plain text files. Start looking through them from the most recent backwards. See if anything stands out. In other words, printer, scanner or CUPS packages updated. Here's the output of one of mine:

Upgraded the following packages:
dkms-nvidia96xx (96.43.19-1pclos2011) to 96.43.20-1pclos2011
ffmpeg (0.6.3-1pclos2011) to 0.6.3-2pclos2011
gstreamer0.10-cdio (0.10.17-1pclos2011) to 0.10.17-2pclos2011
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly (0.10.17-1pclos2011) to 0.10.17-2pclos2011
libavformats52 (0.6.3-1pclos2011) to 0.6.3-2pclos2011
(etc.) ...

If you spot something, post it.

cups.conf looks normal to me. Printer is shared, admin access is needed to set configuration options. Your firewall is wide open, so no ports should be blocked. Printer works fine, scanner doesn't.

EDIT: Check Synaptic to see if libsane-hpaio is installed. If it is, try re-installing it.

djohnston -  I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the work you've put in trying to help me solve this problem, thank you very much!

I checked to see if libsane-hpaio was installed, yup it was there.  I re-installed it but still no dice.

I'll start looking thru the /root/.synaptic/log files for anything that sticks out and report back.

Thanks once again -

OK I went thru all the log files in the /root/.synaptic/log directory but it didn't turn up much.

The files only go back a week to 2011-8-10 and I'm sure this problem popped up before that date.  So I'm afraid any log file containing a clue from a package upgrade/installation would no longer be around.

I looked at the last few lines in /var/log/syslog when I tried to scan using simple-scan and maybe there's something here:
Code: [Select]
Aug 16 20:57:10 speedy snmpd[2593]: Connection from UDP: [192.168.0.21]:48467->[255.255.255.255]:161
Aug 16 20:57:10 speedy snmpd[2593]: Received SNMP packet(s) from UDP: [192.168.0.21]:48467->[255.255.255.255]:161
Aug 16 20:57:13 speedy simple-scan: io/hpmud/pp.c 627: unable to read device-id ret=-1
Aug 16 20:57:25 speedy simple-scan: scan/sane/marvell.c 66: unable to load restricted library: libhpmud.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I think it's trying to load a library called libhpmud.so
On my system I found a file called /usr/lib/libhpmud.so.0 but no file called /usr/lib/libhpmud.so

I wonder if this could be the problem?

I did a search and found this which talks about something similar.

Thanks for the heads up. If that is the problem, it just needs a soft link. Do this as root.

cd /usr/lib
ln -s /usr/lib/libhpmud.so.0 /usr/lib/libhpmud.so
exit

Then try scanning. If that doesn't do it, it's a permission issue. Plug the all-in-one into a USB port and make sure it registers. Then, in a terminal:

lsusb

Post the output.
