it seems you have to use the eject command, not umount
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

Yes.  I've done that. No go.

Yesterday a Kindle arrived to my home  ;D (not mine, but still....)  probably I will start trying   ;D

For now I need to change some PDF's to read in the Kindle, I saw a good tutorial somewhere but I don't remember where.

My memory is failing more frequently that I like

I haven't done it yet, but ibeieve the process is pretty simple...
It's just a matter of connecting via USB, taking the PDF and dropping it into the documents folder on your Kindle.

You can read PDFs in their native format on the Kindle, but they suck royally most of the time - you don't get all the text re-sizing options and the pages are either too big or too small. You can also use Calibre to convert them to .mobi format, which is sometimes better if the book is mostly text. If there are a lot of images in the PDF, though, I've found that conversion is usually a waste of CPU cycles...

PDF has been my only disappointment with my Kindle.  :-\ But what the heck, there are so many available things to read that I seldom pay it any mind.

Oh, both of them are very good readers  ;D  they even ask for books as birthday gift (I always loved reading but never did that  ???  )  and plan ahead the books they will read.

I'm waiting since probably the other will ask for a Kindle too  I saw him trying the gadget   :-\

I'm hoping to get the Kindle DX.  Only thing stopping me is that it does not have Wi-Fi.  It's 3G only.  And 3G on the Kindle, where I live, is non existent. so, I either need to download all content via USB, or wait for a Kindle DX with both Wi-Fi and 3.

I revisited this issue and stumbled upon the solution. Or perhaps the solution was mentioned up here and I finally took the time to actually READ the directions.:)

Anyhow here it is:

Quote
Eject your Kindle when you're done to allow it to charge; simply unmounting it will not be enough to intiate the charging process. To eject it completely you'll need to know the label assigned to the Kindle. Open a new terminal Window, and enter "sudo fdisk -l" to see a list of hard disks on your computer. Kindle can be identified under the "System" heading by its file system, which will be listed as "W95 FAT32," and the amount of space, listed under "Blocks" as "3205336." Find the device label at the beginning of that row, often "/dev/sdb1" if the Kindle is the only connected USB device. To eject it, enter "sudo eject /dev/sdb1".

http://www.ehow.com/how_8732721_format-kindle-linux.html

I did the fdisk -l command after getting into root.

I found the Kindle as "/dev/sde1" on my system.

I issued the eject command as "eject /dev/sde1."  My Kindle ejected, the home screen came up and the charge icon is showing that it is now charging from my computer.

I'm going to watch the game and let the Kindle charge to see if it does indeed go from the orange light (charging) to the green light (indicating that the Kindle is now fully charged.).

Amazing what reading the directions can do ;)  Perhaps this would be a good addition for the knowledge base for others who are in to big of a hurry to read the directions.

Somebody else has a kindle and wanted to automate the ejection procedure talked about in this thread by just clicking a desktop icon and i created a simple program to do that and the instructions to build and run it are at:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,98811.msg841555.html#msg841555

Georgetoon, you have a kindle, can you test the program, thnx?
.. 3 things are certain in life : death, taxes and software bloat ..
.. tell me something i don't know, something i can use as i struggle to reason with the world around me ..

@Georgetoon  ..Since your back testing...  ...did you ever get a chance to test my attempt at solving this?

 ??? ;D

@muungwana-   Perhaps you can audit my hack if you think it is a worthwhile solution..  ;)
