(Solved) I bought a Kindle. Charging battery with PCLinuxOS
« on: August 09, 2011, 10:56:08 AM »
I bought a Kindle and it comes with a micro SB cord tht aows you to plug into a wall outlet o plug into a USB port on a computer.

hen plugging into Windows, a message on the indle comes up saying that I can now access the drives. if I want to siply just charge the unit, eject the device form the system.  When I do so, the Kindle'shome screen comes up and I can see the battery icon indicating it is charging.

In PCLinuxOS, I plug in to USB, the same screen notice comes up. I can access a the drives on the Kindle.  When I unmount, the home screen does not come up.

Is there something I need to do to get the Kindle to the charging mode when plugged into PCLinuxOS?

i can plug in an xperia 10 and it will give me three options, one of which is to charge the battery.  i haven't set any special parameters.  pclinuxos gets on and does it by itself, clever old os.

The Kindle just isn't cooperating.  With the screen message up, it's still charging.  But, I can't use the Kindle while it charges.

Whereas, in Windows, Kindle allows me to get rid of the message screen and let me read all my e-books.

Did a search and just found this:

Charging your Kindle with Linux
  Tuesday, May 24, 2011
To charge your kindle, you need to connect it via usb, and the eject it. This command should work on any Kindle in any recent Linux out-of-the box. You have have to install "eject", though:

sudo eject /dev/disk/by-label/Kindle

If you don't have /dev/disk/by-label look for the first partition, e.g. /dev/sdb1 and eject that, not sdb itself.

Do you have automount enabled? If so, in KDE, unmount it in the device manager. Does that do anything?
All that is is good. PCLinuxOS is.

No, it just hasn't been a problem for me. Kindle has amazing battery life, so I can read for days without a charge, and when I need one, I just plug it into the wall overnight - can't read while I'm sleeping! ;D

My curiosity is piqued now, though, so I'm gonna go get it and see what Georgetoon is talking about.

Thank you for investigating this.:)

I concur!  The Kindle is wonderful!  Battery life is pretty impressive!

Amazon.com just announced today that they now support reading books in browsers.  Safari and Chromium are supported but Firefox isn't.

I absolutely love the E-ink!  Right now, I'm reading Theodore Rex.  Absolutely fabulous book!

Folks,get a Kindle!

Well, phooey, I don't see an answer to the question, and I've tried mounting and unmounting the Kindle in all sorts of ways. However, I do have a wall charger plugged in right next to my desk (same one for my cell phone), and if I ever want to read and charge at the same time, I can do it with that.

And yes, E-ink rocks! Other devices can provide e-book reading, but there is only one Kindle. If I was a rich guy, I would probably have a rooted Nook, too, but I'm happy with what I have in any case.

Well, I tried the sudo commands (actually, su) I linked above and no go.

I can also charge using the wall charger.  An outlet is nearby in my studio.  Still, would be nice to use PCLinuxOS and the USB drive.

Is this something I need to do in PCC?

It doesn't work anyway, even if you make sure it's unmounted in PCC>Local disks>Manage disk parttions. I guess I should mention that I tried it from the command line (umount /dev/sdwhatever-the-Kindle) as well as from the Device Notifier (beside the clock).  I also tried opening Calibre and unmounting it there, too.

Is there anything else I forgot?  ;)

I think that covers it. I did the command line repeatedly and Device Notifier. Same result here.
