Lenovo Thinkpad T61p and PCLOS
« on: August 09, 2011, 07:59:00 AM »
Just got hold of a Lenovo Thinkpad T61p with 8GB of RAM :-).So i'm ready to start dual booting it with Win7 64bit.The question now is what Linux distro to co-install on it.According to this link: http://www.linlap.com/wiki/ibm-lenovo+thinkpad+t61 it works 100% with OpenSUSE 11.4 with no tweaking.However ideally i would rather stick with PCLinuxOS because (1) i'm familiar with it (2) its a rolling distro and (3) has a great community.

So i'm interested to know if any of you have this machine running pclinuxos on it and if so did you need to tweak it and how did you go about doing it.Hopefully we can turn this into a useful "how to" thread for newbies who wish to run pclos on this popular thinkpad.

Why not just put a couple (or more) versions of PCLinuxOS on it and switch between them as the fancy takes you.

As for recommending other distros I personally wouldn't know what to suggest but I don't think I would anyway as it can lead to a few arguments of which is the better one and so on.......

Have an X61 Tablet and an R61i here which run PCLINUXOS perfectly without any tweaking.
All that is is good. PCLinuxOS is.

A USB Memory stick could be a good starting point.

In December my son received a Lenovo Laptop as a gift and ran PCLinuxOS flawlessly, I tried it before using a USB Memory stick. A couple of months ago I had to choose a laptop for the office, after getting the OK from the Office Depot manager used the same method in front of a terrified salesman, found two computers worth of take it home (office).
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

@aguila

Have you used X61 as a tablet more frequently than as a notebook/laptop? If so, how does PClos fare. I have tried Fedora14 Design spin, with Florence virtual keyboard + CellWriter and it would have been perfect. What's actually keeping me from using the thinkpad in tablet mode? I could rotate the screen but the stylus is not aware that it should adjust to the new x,y orientation; someone's working on this but it's not a showstopper for me. I chat in IRC and type more than I use gimp with tablet. But if you're able to use PClos with the tablet's features then I might switch.

FWIW,

I have a Thinkpad Z61t that runs PCLinuxOS Phoenix perfectly.
