I just updated fully a week or so ago.

The kernel is not automatically updated, you need to open synaptic and explicitly mark the new kernel to be installed, once installed, reboot your computer and wait a few, it need to rebuild some drivers.

The older kernel will not be removed, and if something go wrong you will be able to boot using the older kernel.

If you still choose to not install the new kernel, remember to add the --lzma option when using mylivecd.

If you find difficult to follow the provided instructions, let us know exactly how is set up your system so that we can provide you the exact command line to use, the information we need are:

the content of the file /etc/fstab
the output of the command df   -m

mylivecd is a rather powerful command, but require your cooperation.  ;)

PS: djohnston : if he excludes his home directory, his config files will be missing. Wouldn't there be a more interesting way to do things there ?

We don't know the size of his home directory. The DVD could exceed 4GBs in size. Probably the best way to do it is create a new account and copy his normal user's settings over there. But, the guy's confused enough already.

I usually find easy to suggest making a backup of personal datas somewhere else under the shape of one big tarball :  a *.tar.bz2 file which will keep all the attributes and will be easy to untar back to the new home, then put all theses datas in one only directory under the home user, then exclude just that one sub-directory.

Hi,

except that --lzma is not used anymore in mylivecd. I uses xz compression max (default), or --xz (less compressed, can be compared to --lzma), or --gzip (very less compressed, but faster to make an iso).

And I am not sure at all that the actual mylivecd does in fact work with any of our older kernels.

Remastering Tools – mylivecd was updated to work with the latest release. mylivecd added the ability to install PCLinuxOS from the boot menu without having to go to the desktop first. There are 3 compression schemes available now for remastering your installation. xz maximum compression, xz normal compression and gzip for fast compression. xz max takes longer to generate the LiveCD but produces the most compressed image where as gzip will create a LiveCD fairly quick but the compressed image will be larger. mylivecd can also generate a LiveDVD with up to 4 gigs of compressed data. Usually a 10-12 gig installation will compress into a 4 gig DVD.

Texstar also reminded recently in a thread in one of the mailing lists that --lzma option for mylivecd is not available anymore.

lzma  is still listed in the mylivecd script here ......  for older kernels.

Was the reference on the mailing list only applicable to the new 64bit OS?

no, from mylivecd --help:

Quote
--lzma                          Use with kernels older than 2.6.37
--gzip                          Use gzip compression for the image
--xz                            Use xz compression for the image

Thanks. I missed that he was using an older kernel. I edited my post to include the --lzma option.

I'm using Gnome,so the KDE suggestion is not applicable?

I'll look to see if I have the latest Gnome kernel.I'll put that in my subject line.

Thanks for your patience all.

Hi,

The third one. You can move the columns in Synaptic, if you move the one which is at the right of the kernel name, you will see the end of the name. You can choose the kernel 2.6.38.3 among several versions : bfs, non bfs, a64 if you have a 64bits cpu, and a pae, for machines with more than 4 GB memory.

/!\ Install your new kernel, then reboot. Only after you can remove the older one. Don't do that until you reboot to the new one !

Thanks.I'll try to see how large a file it is.I have bandwidth restrictions using Wildblue.I'm at 81% of the 7500Mb rolling monthly allowance.I must use the 32 bit versions. My machine is a dual core, but it's 3+ years old.An Asus with an AMD cpu.

           Thanks again.
