claws mail
« on: August 05, 2011, 06:39:29 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I've just started using Claws Mail since Thunderbird brings my computer to a crawl. So far it looks great. I just had a couple of questions.

1) I've set up spam assassin (installed plugin) and I think it's enabled as I can configure it. However, under Preferences->Plugin->Spam Assassin there is only one option of which folder to put spam in. I need to separate my spam by account, is there a way such that spam from account X goes to the spam folder in account X and spam from account Y goes to the spam folder in Account Y?

2) Is there a unified view so that all my inboxes are under one giant inbox?

3) Where does claws mail store all of its archives, my mail etc... If I ever decide to uninstall, I don't want a few gigs of random old mail in some hidden directory somewhere. I tried looking in the home folder but I couldn't find it.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Not sure, but think you can setup "filters" to redirect messages where you prefer. See Configuration -> Filtering

Yes, I have setup so:
Configuration -> Edit Account -> Preference -> Receive -> Default inbox

File are stored in /home/<you user name>/<name of your main folders>

Hm, any specific guidance and how to test it.

No matter how hard I try, I can't find this.

I don't think this is correct. I dug some more and I get it in /home/<username>/.claws-mail/imapcache/<email account>/<name of folders>. However, unlike thunderbird, it doesn't keep all the message in the cache but only a subset. Is that true and it just fetches from the server what is needed? Thus I don't have the entire mail archive on my computer?

Also, any guidance on how to set up the filters? Lastly, it seems to always create a "sent" folder no matter how many times I map that to "Sent Messages" on the server...

It's big, but the user's manual is in plain text here: http://www.claws-mail.org/manual/claws-mail-manual.txt

It's been a while, but I believe you need the claws-mail-mailmbox-plugin package for direct access to mail folders. Do you already have it installed?

As to 3 - mine is in /home/longtom/mail

I am not at my clawsmail box right now - but I will be tonight.  If you haven't come right until then I'll check point 1 and 2.

Configuration -> Filtering
basically you define some rules to filter selected messages (based on "from", "to", "subject", ...) and you define some action, typically "move" to some folder you prefer.

Like "nearly anything" in claws-mail the inbox folder is user configurable, probably I have customized it, sorry about.
Anyway you can do the same, therefore you can place your folder where you prefer.

Hm, so I've now gotten to download a local cache though I still can't find where it goes to. I checked /home/greg/Mail (or mail) and it's empty...

"Download a local cache"? I don't know what that means. If it's already local, there is nothing to download from another location.

Sorry, I'll be more specific. I went to Configuration -> Preferences -> Other -> Miscellaneous and checked "Synchronize Folders as Soon as Possible". Now my mail opens instantly so I believe it's on my hardrive (rather than pulling it from the imap server). Problem is, I just don't know where...

What folder are you using as your default inbox?

I do not use imap servers, but as far as I know, messages usually resides on server, this allow for multiple mail client among other things.

IMAP supports both on-line and off-line modes of operation. E-mail clients using IMAP generally leave messages on the server until the user explicitly deletes them. This and other characteristics of IMAP operation allow multiple clients to manage the same mailbox. Most e-mail clients support IMAP in addition to POP to retrieve messages; however, fewer email services support IMAP.[2] IMAP offers access to the mail storage. Clients may store local copies of the messages, but these are considered to be a temporary cache.
