zapjb seems to think that the chip set on that Toshiba A-6 3400M was just released in June and that this might be  causing the problem (extreme screen flicker so he can't log in)  -  that is all I now.

Yeah, the Intel integrated graphics card stuff is problematic.  As for ATI stuff, well, you can forget it: ATI integrated cards are barely supported.

Using a ATI 5730 right now and it works just about flawlessly.
ati 4570 here, with toshiba satellite l500 no problem here... Runs everything smooth as a butt
Office required Windows XP or better, so I installed PCLinuxOS :D
