2011.06 autologin: Just curious about behaviour.
« on: July 28, 2011, 02:18:09 AM »
HP NX9005 laptop with fresh install of 2011.06 fully updated, and Autologin set.
-Love it, but it does this peculiar thing. Every 6th or so boot, it stops at the User screen and asks me to identify myself. Now in theory this is a bonus security feature if it were stolen with the Autologin still set, but I'm curious about why it does it. And yes, I have set Autologin independently from PCC>Configure LXDE, and >Configure Computer to check for differences in behaviour, and rummaged about everywhere else I can think of looking for clues. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Independently from PCC? ??? ??? ??? Do you mean you set up autologin via GDM Setup? That can give behavior such as you describe.

Autologin should be set up through PCC > Boot.

Hmm...... been near 2 years since I used GDM for autologin, but I had this behavior when I did.

Independently from PCC

Oh dear. I see what you mean, Neal. Make that "I have tried setting up Autologin from both avenues available in PCC, one trial at a time, and the results were the same in both cases".

My initial letter makes it sound like I tried pressing every key at once just to see what happened! In reality I only have enough fingers for nine and a half keys. Putting fingers where they shouldn't have been when I was a teen...

Both avenues? I know of only one -- PCC > Boot > Set up autologin.
Any road, try stting it up though GDM Setup -- lxdecc > System tab > GDM Settings.

Neal: I can access Autologin from PCC>Configure Computer>Boot and from PCC>Configure LXDE>GDM>Security(? I speak from memory but fairly sure it's >Security)
>>Log definitely produces the behaviour, that is the current setting. But GDM did too. Will try unchecking Autologin, reboot, and go through GDM when I get home in around 6 hours.

You're mixing up two different control centers, PCC -- Menu > More Applications > Configuration > Configure Your Computer and lxdecc -- Menu > More Applications > Configuration > Configure Your LXDesktop

Have a look at PCLinuxOS Control Center --
It is PCC > Boot  not  PCC>Configure Computer>Boot.
PCC>Configure LXDE>GDM>Security does not exist.

lxdecc (LXDE Control Center) > System tab > GDM Settings > Security tab.

Home now. Yes, your path to the lxdecc Security setting is correct now that I have the thing in front of me. Knowing that it is in PCC, I had just used the Taskbar icon for access and then tried to explain where I'd ended up. Rule #1: When you've dug yourself a hole, just throw the shovel out, don't keep digging!
I've undone the >Boot Autologin and set again through lxdecc. See what happens. Thanks again.

Update: The problem still exists, and very, very occasionally as it boots up I have seen an entry at the bottom of the parade (the text bit that runs alongside the boot graphics) that says something like "gpe storm detected. switching to polling mode". This doesn't appear to be connected to any form of behaviour during the session. It still just works.

Neal: I'm going to research the outcome of a similar-sounding problem I recall with my Eeepc 701 a year or so ago. I recollect that I settled on a timed login to sort that, and can tell you that the identical Full 2011.06 Updated install it currently runs from an SD goes straight in. Something in the water down here?  :D

Neal: not a biggy. Let's just park it meanwhile and see if life and updates overtake us. Deal??

Oh, and thanks again for my favouritest distro, LXDE!  ;D  ;D
