I have tried the USB  and the newest LXDE that has the new kernel.  I could use the music disks immediately and also after being in use of the OS for several hours.  And everything seemed to work smoothly.

Next I am going to use the USB to try the latest KDE which also has the newer kernel.

It has been suggested that I post the following here as there might be something that could be of help to know why I cannot play the cds at any time.  Perhaps also something that might reveal why the new kernel is not working for me.  All around I do not seem to be having that good experience that I have in the past.  :(  I am not anxious to make any big changes (reinstalling  :'( ) and hope there is a simple solution.  :)

[meme@localhost ~]$ df
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda5              12G  5.1G  5.8G  47% /
/dev/sda7              22G  2.4G   19G  12% /home
tmpfs                 243M     0  243M   0% /dev/shm
[meme@localhost ~]$

ms_meme,
may be you know you can install/uninstall whichever kernel you want from Synaptic.

tmpfs                 243M     0  243M   0% /dev/shm

What affect (if any) does this entry have on how the OS works?

Does it indicate some limitation placed on the use of tmp or its size?

I do not have such an entry here .....

I suspect on a system with very limited memory it could cause problems ....

I am posting from the USB in the LXDE.
I just tried the KDE from my USB.  Here is what happened/didn't happen.  :(

The desktop appeared and then a box telling the passwords. About 5 seconds later all went black.  I could only see the mouse arrow.
I ctrl/alt/backspace.  The Welcome to Local Host log in box appeared and I logged in with guest.
Again the desktop appeared and went through the black screen again.
I tried again.  Then I tried with the root password. Nothing different.

Unless there is something else I can try, I don't seem to be able to use/try the KDE on the USB.

Restarted and chose the persistent LXDE which I had used once before.  So to look at it some more.

Hi ms_meme,

just want you know that we are still watching at your CD/DVD issue!  ;)

How about CD/DVD in your new XFCE ?

I will try to post a summary about this issue, within few hours.  ;)

I'm glad somebody is watching 'cause I sure can't keep up with it.  :(

When I tried XFce with the Live OS in the USB, I am sure I remember remarking to just19 that the CDs worked fine there.  I remember listening when I put the CD in at the beginning.  But can't remember if I tried after several hours of use.

Just now on your reminder, I inserted both a music CD and one that had pictures on it.  With the install neither are coming up.  Nothing happening.  Unless I am doing something wrong.  :(  I have been in XFce for 6 or more hours.

Now waiting a poetic answer from ms_meme :D

I put the CD back in and brought up the player: gxine.  Then went to File/cd.
Up pops this the following:

Error from the xine engine.  Autoplay input plugin 'CD' failed.  Check engine output for futher details.

I don't know if this means anything.  I know I can play my own recorded songs on the gxine.

what if you reinsert the music CD ?

Can you confirm you have installed the latest version of XFCE = phoenix-2011-07 ?
(this is important when correlated to the past issue about kernel/mouse issue and sluggish behavior ....)

I put the CD in back and forth a lot and nothing happens.

I am sure I have the latest version of XFCE

Then you are experiencing issues with CD/DVD both using KDE or XFCE, but not always, mostly after some hours of works.
Correct ?

That just seems like what it is to me.  I am going to reboot now and come back to XFCE and see what happens.

Reboot.  Put the CD in and brought up the gxine player.  Chose CD and am playing right now.
It did not come up automatically though.
I can see the Audio CD listed in the left panel and see all the songs in the right page.
