I need to put another Hard drive(solved)

Hi, first, excuse my english
Now, I have a Pc with 1 HardDrive of 1TB of capacity.
In this HD I have installed PclinuxOs and W7, when I make the partitions only give 50GB to W7 and the rest to Pclinux.
Now I need more space for W7(to install games) and I don't wanna resize the partitions with Gparted(I have tried it, and I had problems)
I am thinking to buy another HD, with 500GBs, and put it in the Pc.This second Hd will be only for W7.
And this is my question, Can I connect the Hd in the Pc, run W7, format the Hd and nothing more?

This action could give problems with the Grub?
Would have to do something in Pclinux?

I do this about once a month and have no problems if you do one thing at a time.
Also, I use the live CD

Just yesterday, I re-sized 2 data partitions of about 200Gb, deleted a partition located before these ones, re-sized the one next to it to fill the empty space and created a 100Gb partition at the end of the HD.
No problem at all. But.....one thing at the time...no batch work.

As you stated that you have Win7 and Pclos on that drive, I assume you tried to move/resize the Pclos psrtition, using Gparted in Pclos....That doesn't work.
You have to use the LiveCD in this case, or resize from within Win7

If you still don't want to try, and buy a 2nd HD, I would keep the first one for windows and the second one for Linux.
You still can use the space on the first one to store data.

If partition A comes before partition B the risk of doing so is negligible. If partition B comes before partition A, the data on A has to be moved so the risk is slightly greater. That said, I have done it many times without any data loss.

If you mean...adding as in 1+1=1 .
I don't think so.
Normal procedure is --resizing--moving--creating -deleting

As I said before.
1--Get Gparted LiveCD
2--shrink your 2nd partition, which I assume is PClinuxOS
3--Enlarge your first partition, which I assume is win7

Please note, I never worked like this with win7, so my advice is with the assumption that win7 behaves the same as winXP

You could use this hard disk for windows data and install games etc, there without affecting linux.

If you wish to install windows on that disk, you will have to edit/reinstall GRUB after installing windows, but that's no big deal. If you do, you may also want to change the boot order in the BIOS to the new disk first for the install, and then back to the original disk first, before repairing GRUB.

It used to be that if you wanted to expand sda6 into the space occupied by sda5 preceding it on the hard drive, you had to back upp sda6, remove sda5 and sda6, create a new sda5, format it, and restore what you had backed up. But that was years ago.

That said, backing up is always a good idea. You never know what could go wrong. I've had the partitioner in Windows Vista change the size of a partition so that I ended up with a filesystem that was larger than the partition that was supposed to contain it. But nothing like that has ever happened to me in Linux.

Well, I can't fundamentally influence your thinking. But how am I confused?

Of course you can't expand a partition into the space occupied by another partition without freeing that space first. My second point, however, was that since a few years back you can expand a partition in both directions on the fly -- usually without losing data, even if you don't copy and restore the contents.

Yes, today that is unnecessary. That was my first point.

But since a few years back you can also resize as in:
Make hda5 smaller, then, make hda6 bigger -- moving the beginning of a partition and not just the end of it.

Except that for the last few years hda5 and hda6 would have been sda5 and sda6.

I had problems using Gparted with Win7 (that BTW is different from XP), it messed the partition, it was time ago and probably it is fixed now but I started using EaseUS http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm and never gave me problems.

Check it, it's a good piece of software.

Gparted is in constant development, and microsofton continues in its attempts to make things difficult.
For safety when working with NTFS perhaps check this from the gparted manual

To improve the ability to shrink NTFS partitions, you might consider one or more of the following:

    Defragment the file system.

    Booting into Safe Mode with the commercial operating system that uses NTFS can improve the ability to defragment the file system. To enter Safe Mode press F8 while your computer is booting the operating system.

    Check the partition for errors with the following command:

    C:> chkdsk /f /r

    Remember to reboot back into the commercial operating system that uses NTFS to allow the chkdsk command to execute.

    Temporarily disable the paging file. The paging file occupies a fixed location in the partition that the defragmentation process is unable to move.

    Temporarily move large files to another partition or disk device. Large files are defined as greater than a few hundred Megabytes (MB).

    Ensure a proper shut down of the commercial operating system that uses NTFS before you resize the NTFS partition

Yes, I have heard about it. Something to do with ' so-called ' un-movable files , put there by the win7 installation at the end of a drive  (( some bug report on the www )).

You obviously can't as the HD is full.

Why exactly do you ask  ?  Anything I said  ?
