And opened the door to having community members painting all administrators with the same brush;D ;D ;D

It won't stick. ;D ;D ;D

As long as they use water based it's an easy cleanup.  ;D

Use apt to get aptupgrade and immediately run it. Reboot, and you should have new apt, rpm and synaptic. This was all over the forum a few weeks ago, but if you don't pay attention here you will run into problems.

that's the only right answer
the current versions of rpm, apt and synaptic are only available in unstable

sorry but  not one of your hints solved the problem.
thanks to all anyway.
djohnston & sproggy: knowing how I involuntarily erased the synaptic command would have suggested you a smarter way to cope with that issue?

a fresh install will surely fix it.

ciao

sorry, this script runs only once to update the programs; I've overlooked
the only way is select unstable, but please only install synaptic
wait a bit if there are reasoned objections to use this process

I'm stuck with the same problem. I still don't know what or how you reinstalled synaptic. So please help me out here in detail. None of you ever exactly stated how the issue was resolved in detail.

What, exactly, is your problem? You've not included enough detailed information for any of us to offer accurate suggestions as to how to fix whatever it is. You've only offered your opinion that your problem may be the same as someone else's. Did you accidentally erase your Synaptic installation too?

This is my problem.

apt-get install synaptic
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Package synaptic has no available version, but exists in the database.
This typically means that the package was mentioned in a dependency and
never uploaded, has been obsoleted or is not available with the contents
of sources.list
E: Package synaptic has no installation candidate

What EXACTLY is the proper solution to this in detail?

Install the package aptupgrade, then run the application aptupgrade.

Also, install the newest kernel and reboot into it.

ok I did as per instructed

apt-get install aptupgrade
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  aptupgrade
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 removed and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B/3010kB of archives.
After unpacking 3062kB of additional disk space will be used.
Committing changes...
Preparing                                ############################## [100%]
Updating / installing
  aptupgrade-1.0-7pclos2011.noarch       ############################## [100%]
Please close out all applications and run Apt Upgrade
from the Menu - Software Center -> Apt Upgrade
Done.

I ran the program from the menu, then what ? I went to CLI and did apt-get install synaptic after that and got this

apt-get install synaptic
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Package synaptic has no available version, but exists in the database.
This typically means that the package was mentioned in a dependency and
never uploaded, has been obsoleted or is not available with the contents
of sources.list
E: Package synaptic has no installation candidate

What's the problem?  What's going on. All I want to do in install synaptic.

Yes I rebooted several times.

I ran the apt upgrade from menu and got this

"aptupgrade was already applied.

Exiting..."

I checked the menu several times and didn't find synaptic package manager.
What is going on ?  Does it add Synaptic to the menu or what? This is getting annoying  :-[

Why did you run aptupgrade a second time? ??? It is needed only once! Did you install the new kernel?

Open Menu > More Applications > Terminals > Root Terminal (Root Konsole) and enter this command --
Code: [Select]
/usr/sbin/synaptic

Neal,

apt upgrade looks to see what version of synaptic you have installed in order to determine whether it should run or not and guess what? He removed synaptic so apt upgrade is just going to exit. What he needs to do is download and manually install the old version of synaptic from the following link then he can run apt-upgrade!

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/pclinuxos/temp/synaptic-0.57.2-20pclos2009.i586.rpm

Can you please instruct him how to manually install a rpm package please?

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.
