system is fully updated with the exception of Firefox and Thunderbird which i hold fire on due to extension compatibilities. Have tried with kernel-2.6.38.8-pclos1.bfs,kernel-2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs neither even recognized the drive. Reverted back to  kernel-2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs and is now seen.
Have been trying to read card out of the phone but no joy,so,i tried the camera card,Sony MS and all is well, can read and write to it. so i guess the phone,s card isn,t compatible :(.
thanks for your help Just19,do you think the express card, when it arrives, should work straight away?
