Search?
« on: July 24, 2011, 08:29:41 AM »
What is the LXDE equivalent to search your hard drive for files?  Or am I overlooking a utility in the menu?

Doesn't PCManFM allow searching to be carried out?

If it dos, I must be overlooking something.:)I have LXDE installed on my own system, but really, I haven't used it too much. I'm still finding my way around so I can introduce it to my brother Jim.

If you have never used this command, first you should run command (as root):
Code: [Select]
updatedb... and in the future do this from time to time.

Okay.:)

What exactly does this command do?

And is it more of a requirement for LXDE, or should it be done for KDE, as well?

With the first run, command updatedb creates database of all files stored on your hardisk(s) (indexing all files). More informations you can get after:
Code: [Select]
man updatedbUsing of this command is independent of your desktop environment (kde, gnome. lxde). Suitable tip is you can simply redirect results of searching files to another file e.g.:
Code: [Select]
locate *.jpg > /home/USER/Desktop/my_jpg

Did you check catfish? is very good too
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

It fails too much often here (so I'm not using it already) - so tell us if it fails to you too, szorady. :)
