DosBox games through WINE
« on: July 23, 2011, 08:41:16 AM »
I have recently found a way to get dos and PURE DOS games to work through WINE!

Run dos games through WINE with ONE SINGLE CLICK....It works!

If anyone is interested please send a PM - I'll send you a zip file containing the files needed to make your
game run using DosBox through WINE! Just follow the simple instructions in the zip file (READ1ST file).
Please make sure you send me your EMAIL ADDRESS in the PM. Thanks.

I've gotten more games to run BETTER this way! Run your dos games right off your desktop!

Pinball Dreams 1 and 2 run wonderfully in DosBox, but under WINE they fly! I've gotten one of my favorite
puzzle games (very old) called Gearworks to run in this method and it works FLAWLESS. In DosBox it was
VERY SLOW but in WINE it flies!!! I can now play it without a problem!

PM me for more info....OR if someone would like the info for the magazine please PM me.
I'm surprised this runs so well. Just trying to help the PCLinuxOS gaming community! If I can, I'll try to
find a place to put this zip file for everyone. Just need the time.

Zip file = 1.6MB (includes properly setup DosBox boot files to load in WINE).

You'll need to have WINE installed to use the files in this zip. You'll install NOTHING else. Just use the files
in the zip and you'll be playing in no time. Open the zip file on your desktop and place your game in the
proper folder. Next, fix the DosBox .conf file to find the game. That's it. Piece of cake. Nothing else will
ever be required of you for this game. Now all you have to do is click on DosBox.EXE and you'll run! :)
DosBox takes care of everything. Run all your games this way with no issues.

If you have already "setup" or "setsound" or set up your sound configuration this method just might work
better for you...it has for me.

If it all works as advertised, I vote for adding it to the repos, or making the zip file available on the web site.

Might be a great help getting the grand kids off their virus ridden Windows laptops...

The games below are quite OLD - they're called abandonware for a reason and can be made available to
download for free. These are FREE for you to run in WINE.

Transylvania Trilogy: (one zip)
AVAILABLE HERE: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/36201464/TransylvaniaTRILOGY.zip
Transylvania, Crimson Crown and Transylvania III
5.8 MB zip - unzip to your desktop and open the TransylvaniaTRILOGY folder.
Open Transylvania and click Transylvania.exe to run - OR
Open Crimson Crown and click CrimsonCrown.exe to run - OR
Open TransylvaniaIII and click TransylvaniaIII.exe to run!
HAVE FUN!!!
The above three games are interactive fiction with graphics. Text on the bottom. REAL games. The Penguin/
Polarware site have these available for all to download and here they are for PCLinuxOS. You must TYPE in
commands to play the game. If you're not familiar with interactive fiction text adventures, read up on them.

Tesserae
AVAILABLE HERE: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/36201464/Tesserae.zip
WITH SOUND. DosBox alone will not allow this.
One of my favorite puzzle games!
3.2 MB zip - unzip to your desktop, open the Tesserae folder and click on Tesserae.exe! Have fun!

Want to see a favorite Dos game working in WINE? Ask. PM me and tell me which games you would like to see!

Well, seems I made a boo boo. I created the DosInWINE readme file without an extension so it wasn't properly showing as a text file itself.

This has been fixed in the zip download above and here is a link to the actual txt file itself below.

My sincerest apologies to everyone.

REMOVED: OLD version.

Sincerely;
billy7720

A LOT has been updated - INSTALLATION AND SET SOUND setups as well can be done in DosInWINE!

Click on the above link to read up on it.

When setting up WINE, use the TOP RED circled area and NOT the blue section. Thanks to djohnston for this!
See below. Once finished, click APPLY then OK.

NEW games uploaded:

Eight Ball Deluxe (Pinball/Simulation) by Amtex - 3.3Mb
A REAL pinball sim - must see to believe and it runs like wildfire in PCLinuxOS via DosBox through WINE!
FULL SOUND AND MUSIC! (Click on 8BallDlx.exe to run)
PS: The flippers seem to "garble" while moving them OR scrolling the playfield while the ball loads. This is
very normal.

AVAILABLE HERE: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/36201464/Eight%20Ball%20Deluxe.zip

Pinball 4000 (Pinball/Simulation) by Expert Software - 2.8Mb
A very simplistic pinball sim by Spidersoft - WARNING - this game can get slow with multiple balls on the
playfield. FULL SOUND AND MUSIC. Finally got this one to work - won't work in straight dosbox!
(Click on pin4000.exe to run)

AVAILABLE HERE: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/36201464/Pinball4000.zip

Questmaster: The Prism Of Heheutotol (Interactive Fiction w/ graphics) by Miles Computing - 2.8Mb

One of the LAST "type your commands in" type of interactive fiction with graphics. Was supposed to have
other episodes but they never saw the light of day. This IF is NOT to be missed. A GREAT game.
FULL SOUND! (Click on Questmaster.exe to run)
PS: This game is TOUGH. FYI for those who want to "try" IF - this is NOT for beginners!

AVAILABLE HERE: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/36201464/Questmaster.zip

Enjoy the new games!

Download coming soon: Magic: The Gathering (with BOTH add on packs and manual!!!) - 95Mb!

Heard of this?
Quote
Electronic Popple is a recent but sadly unknown platform game that puts you in a role of ROM or RAM, two memory chips that must journey through the insides of the computer to vanquish the evil electrical components. Both the level design and monsters are imaginative-- you'll fight evil resistors, capacitors, and more on circuit boards that can hinder your progress. Between levels, animated cut-scenes advance the plot and introduce new computer characters.

One of the rarest and hardest to find games.....

BLUE ICE - (Puzzle/Adventure) by Psygnosis - 47.9Mb

AVAILABLE HERE: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/36201464/BlueIce.zip

FULL SOUND! (Click on BlueIce.exe to run)

This one was MURDER to get to run but I finally got it! With multiple folders and everything. Won't work in
straight DosBox or straight WINE - it will though with DosInWINE!!!!

First off, this is one of the most obscure and strangest puzzle/adventure games ever written. So, I have no real
idea what to do with this game; if I find a manual I will upload it. It looks interesting enough though! Once you
start the game, pay attention to the icon. It's a magnifying glass. This is used to "look" at things on the screen. You can change your icon by right clicking and scrolling left or right. The hand icon picks up items. Pay close attention to the screen once you use this feature. The arrow icon will activate things on the screen.

MANUAL (PDF ZIPPED): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/36201464/BlueIceManual.pdf.zip

The INFO button at the top right of the screen can also help you and tell you what things are. Pay close attention to EVERY DETAIL. This game is not simple.

STORYLINE:
"A child is born to be king. His inheritance: a heart of ICE. You can save his mystical land that is frozen in the depths of despair. But be warned: the surreal world of Icia will only yield its secrets to those who are prepared to strive for them."

HAVE FUN!!!

IMPORTANT:

TO INSTALL NEW GAMES BY HAND:
Folks, use the DosInWINE.zip for games you wish TO ADD to the DosInWINE files ONLY. I'm sure
there is a game you would like to try to have run through dos in WINE so use the DosInWINE.zip
and place the files to the game in the "C" folder and configure the dosbox.conf file. Then use the
DosBox.exe file to run it. MAKE SURE you read the DosInWINEexplanation.txt file BEFORE you do
this.

The DosInWINE.zip is an "empty shell" waiting for a new game to be placed into it. Nothing more.
The game files are placed in the "C" folder. In all actuality, DosInWINE is telling the game to run in
a "windows" "C" folder. It's emulating it. That's all. Place all the game files AND folders within this
"C" folder and configure the dosbox.conf to either: install, setup, setsound or run via exe file. Yes,
you can do all the above with DosInWINE and it works!

DO NOT USE THE DosInWINE.zip with ANY of the preconfigured games above. These games
already use this zip.

TO PLAY THE ZIP GAMES I HAVE UPLOADED:
For the games I have uploaded, you DO NOT NEED DosInWINE.zip! The games have been already
preconfigured to run. All you have to do is download the game zip file and uncompress it to your
desktop. Once you do, open the folder and click on the EXE file. That's it.

DO NOT USE THE DosInWINE.zip with these preconfigured games. Everything is ready for you to use;
just download the zip, unzip it to your desktop and open the folder. Click on the game.exe file and
you'll be running.

ALSO IMPORTANT: I have preset all the games to run via WINE at 800x600 in screen. If you have
a bigger or better screen size MAKE SURE you change this in your WINE setup AND the dosbox.conf
file! If your desktop is a good size like 1024x768 or 1600x1200 then change this in both sections
AFTER you read the DosInWINEexplanation.txt file. This will help you. More than likely you'll see the
games "chopped" off at the edges of the WINE screen. Change this in your setup and then your
dosbox.conf file. This means the game is running at a lower resolution and your desktop is running
at a HIGHER resolution. If WINE is running at 1024x768 when loaded MAKE SURE you place the SAME
1024x768 within the dosbox.conf file.

Some more FYI for those that are confused. If you seek further help PM me.

NEW GAME UPLOADED:

Albion (Role Playing/Adventure) by Blue Byte - 49.6Mb
One of the most coveted RPG games ever written. You'll have to play it to see what I mean. I won't
give the game away at all!!!
FULL SOUND AND MUSIC! (Click on Albion.exe to run)

AVAILABLE HERE: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/36201464/Albion.zip

Enjoy the game. REMEMBER: YOU DO NOT NEED the DosInWINE.zip file. The game has already been
preconfigured to run - just download, unzip to your desktop. Open the folder and click the Albion.exe
file and you'll run!

NEW GAME UPLOADED:

Pyrotechnica (Sci-Fi Shooter/3D) by Psygnosis - 7.7Mb
One of my most favorite 3D shooters. Fly your spacecraft through 3D worlds and destroy everything
that lives! AMAZING sound, 3D graphics and music. I think you'll agree this game is AWESOME. This game
beats Descent by a mile!!!
ARROW KEYS: Move your craft.
SPACEBAR: Fire missles.
ALT KEY: Fire basic lasers.
FULL SOUND AND MUSIC! (Click on Pyrotechnica.exe to run)

PS: This game IS NOT easy; learn how to move your craft - UP arrow goes down. DOWN arrow goes up!

AVAILABLE HERE: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/36201464/Pyrotechnica.zip

Enjoy the game. REMEMBER: YOU DO NOT NEED the DosInWINE.zip file. The game has already been
