2011.07 - Keyboard Layout Problem
« on: July 21, 2011, 05:56:41 PM »
I just installed the newest version of Phoenix on my netbook:

Model: MSI L1350D
CPU: Intel Atom N455 (1.66 GHz)
Display: 10" WSVGA LED (1024x600)
Ram: 1 GB DDR III
HD: 160 GB
Graphics: Intel N10 Integrated Graphics
Ethernet: RTL8101E/8102E
Wireless: RT3090

After installation, everything worked well, except the keyboard. I selected the proper keyboard (US), but when I tried to use the letter keys (u, i, o, j, k, l, m), I kept getting the corresponding numbers (4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3, 0) that are shown as alternate input on the netbook keyboard. I tried to search for netbook keyboard in the forum, without finding any similar problems. Then I re-installed, ensuring the proper keyboard was selected (again) -- still the same problem.

Before installing Phoenix, I was running PCLinuxOS LXDE 2011.06 with this problem.

Any help on what may be going on, and/or how I can fix it, will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

It seems you have the NumLock turned on ... If so, you can open PCC - > System -> Manage Services, and turn it off.

Don't put yourself down, the NumLock problem has been identified as a snag with XFCE versions of PCLOS recently - presumably a 4.8 XFCE bug.

Ummmm.............I have the same deal on my MacBook, just installed it. I can't get to PCC (unless I misunderstand what that is, good chance) because it wants a password, no keyboard- no password. Any ideas?

Big bummer, I have to call no joy on this one. I get "CPU1: Not responding" on boot up and a blinking curser in safe mode. XFCE looked so sweet on the LiveCD I played with.

On a side note: When installing on a Mac, when you get to the part of install where you can move or modify the boot order with the VM?? stuff, select modify and type "off" at the ACIP=on part and it will install with no problems and will not hang up. I Know this is more work on your part but it would be cool if you had a screen just before that one that asked what you are installing PCLOS on and two radio buttons with "PC" and "Mac" on it and have it write this in for you (run-on-sentence). PCLinxOS would now be the only Mac friendly Linux OS out on the net. As a Mac user, I can tell you, there are allot of us looking for a Linux solution. Just a stray thought.  ;)

At grub screen, you should have your keyboard working:
press F3 (options) and at the end of the parameters line line add a 1 (space separated), then press ENTER.
Your system should boot and provide you a black screen with a # prompt, at that time type:
chkconfig numlock off
reboot

Is this at install or after install? When I hit F3 now, I get 3 or 4 options I can scroll through, like no ACIP and other things I don't get. So I did it anyway and got a c prompt (I don't know what you call it, going back to my DOS days) and put in the numlock off thing. I got another prompt and put in "reboot", it did and I loaded XFCE and still no key board.

Do I need to put in "save" at the prompt or "edit" first? I am more than willing to re-install if I need to, I really really want this to work but I can also go back to LXDE if you guys think that will work better. I was just going for the extra config stuff to make it easier for me. LXDE is still a good product, just needs more tweaking.

I have assumed an already installed system...
The fact you was able to type in the commands means that at prompt your keyboard was working.  ;)
This thread however was about numlock issue... and the fix refers to that issue only.

Is your issue about numlock or is your keyboard completely not working ?

Keyboard works up to login, I can put in my user name and password.  The login screen I am talking about comes up just after selecting normal boot and not safe mode from whatever you call that selection screen. The XFCE program starts, the keyboard stops working and I cannot log into PCC or type in the note pad or use the terminal. I get numbers on some keys and nothing on other keys.  Sorry but I do not understand the difference between a window manager and a desktop, it is all the same to me.  So in other words, I can use my mouse to get around the interface and select things and right click on things but I can not use my keyboard to enter passwords. Hope this helps.

The fact the keyboard is working up to login should exclude xorg related things, what remain are only Xfce settings ...
what is shown in "Xfce 4 Settings Manager -> Keyboard -> Layout" ?

Did you remember to select US Keyboard during your installation? XFCE defaults to UK Keyboard so you have to change it at the keyboard selection screen.
