pCLI-NoX iso's available
« on: July 21, 2011, 05:10:11 AM »

** update to mini below  (focus toward mini release) **

I am Glad to announce the release of not one but two iso's dedicated to CLI usage both are for the advanced user who knows how to fix things - or is not too scared to roll up their sleeves and get under the hood.

Details

pCLI-NoX

iso:size  245.95

Download Link

MD5Sum: 28c7c99ff57bae7fe7f93ecd31ec073d

Booting Notes:

You will be met with a text GRUB boot screen, you can edit the entry by pressing 'e' for edit and confirm that the bootline is ok

There is a conflicting entry in the defailt boot that I have yet to fix you can have either video=directfb (alternativly  the framebuffer of  your choice) OR a VGA= line as follows - please note that using a VGA= line does not guarentee that you will get a framebuffer device to use - I am not sure if VBOX will emulate a framebuffer layer.

once booted you can check the hex code for the available resolutions for your card by using vbetest to convert the hex code into a VGA= Number add 512

General VGA= Codes

Quote
788 = 800x600  at 16bit depth
789= 800x600 at 24bit depth
791 = 1024x768 at 16bit depth
792 = 1024x768 at 24bit depth
794 = 1280x1024 at 16bit depth
795 = 1280x1024 at 16bit depth
not all support the following but give it ago
871 = 1280x800 at 16bit depth
872 = 1280x800 at 24bit depth
866 =1440 x 900 at 16bit depth
867 = 1440x 900 at 24bit depth
837 =1440 x 1050 at 16bit depth
838 = 1440x 1050 at 24bit depth
798 =1600 x 1200 at 16bit depth
799 = 1600 x 1200 at 24bit depth

Install Notes

All should go well, it will prompt for xdm to be installed - selecting cancel should prevent this from trying to install.
Should you whish to use graphical GRUB - this will now work.

pCLI-NoX-Mini v2 (everybody has to have a 'mini' eh?)

Details

pCLI-NoX-Mini v2

iso:size  218.34mb

Download Link

MD5Sum: b7d1c33fb7a6d21710e52896055ef12c

Whats Different

There is no additional framebuffer stuff beyond that which the kernel brings
This release could be slimmed down a lot further - although at risk of not having a true PCLinuxOS Base

v2 added  further basic usability functions and purpose by including

Lynx - THE text browser (secure/ssl capable)
wyrd - Calender app
photorec, foremost, ddrescue, dd_rescue.

KnownIssues

I must have removed somthing I should not have as you need to set your hostname inorder to get on line

There is a lot less apps

Axel - download accelarator (apt-fast should work)
MC - (filemanagement/ftp/editor/viewer/email composing)
MailX - mail user agent (simple 'imaps' reading of mail)
msmtp - smtp handler/client  with send mail compatibility - easy to get basic config)
Lynx - THE text browser (secure/ssl capable)
wyrd - Calender app
photorec, foremost, ddrescue, dd_rescue. (aka - the rescue package)
also included is nano

The above should provide a good "environment" to work with

MailX help

MailX (also can be called via mail/nail)

to  read your imap based email use

To compose email use mailx <targetemail>
this will bring up a subject line - end this with a . and hit enter
this will allow you to type for message
at the end of te message use ctrl d - if msmpt is set up it ill send your mail directly

Sending Email
Read the examples in msmtp to be able to use MC or even MailX to send email

Please read the manpage for each app to assist you.

I have installed pCLI-NoX-v9a - took a couple of attempts as VB glitched out a couple of times.  It didn't give me the option of setting up a user on reboot after install.  I can log in as root, but how do I set up a new user?  I installed a couple of times in case it was VB, but with the same result.  Userdrake didn't work - I take it it needs X?

While logged in as root, issue passwd command to change root's password. To add a new user, issue adduserdrake command.

djohnston,

Thanks for that.  I had just worked it out and checked in to put it to bed.  Should have gone through the other threads first!!
So far it's all working great.  Next will be to build something on it.  Where to start :D

Jase,

I tried the latest (full) iso in VirtualBox with both fb and non-fb and vga=844 (1152x864x24). Both work perfectly. (One can enter vga=ask to get a list at boot time of possible vga codes. The one wanted can then be entered.)

sources.list is up to date. However, ibiblio is the one selected. All users should edit /etc/apt/sources.list to select their favorite repository.

The keyboard installed is UK (Britain). All users should run drakkeyboard to select their chosen keyboard.

Looking very good!

EDIT: video=directfb works in VBox. Screensize is 722x400. Resizing the window before booting makes no difference.

This is really gettin' good Hootiegibbon.
Running live is the same speed as running on the hard drive.   ;D

I got rid of that xdm dialog in the installer.  Uploaded a new version.
Same link as here

Edit:  I uploaded again.  Found a way to hide most of the warnings that mess up the screen, but not all of them (yet)

Very very cool stuff, I will hopefullly be able to clean up the mini version a bit, I will look at minimalising active services on livecd boot up so that the initial RAM is reduced (currently uses the same as the larger iso)

I will look to do this over the weekend time/health/other factors depending.

Installed pCli-NoX-v9 on my EEE-Box, specs here: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,91034.0.html

installation without any issue,
configured wireless driver OK,
audio OK,
framebuffer OK,

to start links in graphic mode had to use: links -g -driver fb, the default directfb look like not working correctly.

starting with page: http://www.pclinuxos.com work OK, then chosing forum doesn't transport you to the forum.
Installed lynx, same result as links

Installed w3m for test only, included a lot of dependencies (+ 280 Mb), but at least this finally opened the forum page.

So far so good  :)

FUN!  Thanks. ;)

Fun + Education.

So far I have learned to edit ~/.screenrc so it displays the battery state and the temperature info... how to take snapshot from the console level and many more things. I have also re-learned few things about mocp player and newsbeuter. To the point - if You want to learn or setup a http server - this is Your iso.
