How to read/write to NTSF partitions in XFCE?

I see by default I am able to mount and access my windows partition through the file manager. I do not seem to have write access as I cannot copy and paste from the ntsf drive. I know this can be done with dolphin and pcman but I don't have those installed as I am now running xfce. Whats the easiest way to get write permissions on this drive, do I need to install another DE or pcman or dolphin to get it?

This is how I used to do it before http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,81692.0.html but now I wanna keep my system slimmer and not have to install other DE's.

Go to: Menu => More Applications => Configuration => NTFS Configuration Tool. If in the Menu there is no shortcut called "NTFS Configuration Tool", install it using Synaptic or terminal (as root):

If you want to mount your ntfs partitions at boot time by adding them to /etc/fstab show me results of commands (as root):

I had the ntsf configuration utility installed already. i told it to auto config and tried it but it didn't work. I rebooted, and on reboot I noticed the link to the drive that used to be on the desktop by default is now gone.

Dont know if this is gonna work. Here are the results of the typed terminal commands. I did not seem to get any result on the last command as you can see. ( it's a snapshot)

Sorry about the image and text size. I could not seem to copy and paste from this terminal.. seems it's different than the other terminal I use. Perhaps I should have used the other one? Heck perhaps it would have been easier to install another DE to get the feature working LOL.

ok ... in thunar you should be able to click on a drive and it becomes mounted read/write ... or as stated you run the ntfs configuration ... on running the configuration utility and selecting auto ... did you then check to see if infact the the enable write support is ticked for both external and internal devices ... if this is not ticked then the auto config didnt work ...

After all you will have full read-write access without mounting partitions in thunar, pcmanfm etc.

thunar, I assume thats the name of the file manager XFCE is using? It just says File Manager for me. I tried autoconfig again and  write support is ticked for both external and internal devices but i still cannot seem to paste if i try to copy, nor does the main windows partition show up anymore in the file manager as well as does not show on the desktop like it did before. ( I also have an HP Tools drive that does show up but theres nothing in it I want to use in Linux.) Does this require a reboot to work?

restart the system ... let it read the fstab at boot

Rebooted and same. still cannot see the win partition anymore.. I could at least see it at first but could not copy/paste, this was before my first autoconfig.

open the NTFS config tool and take the ticks out ... you should then see your drives reappear

Edit. took out ticks, rebooted, and nope.. the main ntsf partition is still not there.

On a whim, I installed Pcman. I can see the drive again but only in pcman and I still cannot copy and paste from the drive. i did enable both external and internal in the ntsf config and rebooted, however this time i did not get the windows popup with the autoconfig option.

What I would not give for an MS System Restore like app in Linux.. Grrrr...

Been playing with this all night and nada.. Until... I found I could not copy and paste BUT I can drag and drop. Thats so odd. Still cant see em in Thunar just PCman. Oh well.. at least if drag N drop will work i can xfer files.

remove all the ntfs devices from your /etc/fstab file save ... and reboot ... your partitions will reappear in thunar ... remove pcmanfm from the phoenix install ... thunar doesnt like it ...
