Hi,

I have apt-sources-update : Version: 0.3  Release: 3pclos2011 installed in my main system, but for new remasters the version was older, did not find the network (which does work) and once removed I can't find it anymore in the repositories.

Has this package been removed for ever or is it's disappearance temporary ?

Thanks,
Mélodie

and why?
how I notice now, which is the best mirror for me?
and who could guarantee that no mirrors fly out more?

this response is not acceptable

That package has been removed pending a redesign or possibly obsoleted by yum and yumex since yum already comes with a fast mirror plugin. I don't know when it will be ready but probably after the 64 bit iso is out.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

I am sorry that the response is not acceptable to you, but that doesn't change things.  Perhaps Texstars response is more suitable for you.

See if this is more acceptable... try a different mirror. Simple as that.

I've run every PCLinuxOS release from the very first and never once used that application. I've always found a fast connection to at least one out of two mirrors tried. (most mirrors I've tried have consistently had acceptable speed) If I find a mirror slow, I switch to another. Heanet is always a good fallback mirror. If the same mirror is slow every time I try it, I remove it from my sources.list. Problem solved.

sorry if I disagree
If a program stops working, I can understand it
but what is wrong with apt-source-update?

Not always nearest servers appear the fastest to me. Test repo speed is showing it. The fastest for me at home are the Swiss servers but at work ( 10 km from home) much faster is a Finnish server. :-\ Both are not the closest here.

Good Yum comes with built-in speed check. :)

Hi margarita,

I came ask the question because I am being building and Openbox Bonsai, an Openbox, and an Education. I have seen apt-sources-update not working anymore in Bonsai, but working in my current install (the last version sent it 2011) so I needed to know if I could remove it now and put it back later, or remove it now and not think about it anymore.

Texstar just explained the main point : with Yum/Yumex it will be redundant as it's already in the Yum program as a plugin.

Regards,
Mélodie

This is an explanation, which I understand

Hi,

I would like to reopen this thread because I feel that not having it anymore makes it missing. I don't use Yumex because I don't feel it provides me what I have in Synaptic, and Apt-sources-update in my machines, where I won't uninstall it, still works perfectly.

The one point which I have been very happy about it the ability to get the information about THE SLOWEST mirrors, which happen to be also the most late for updates. Thanks to this I have been able to reinstall the former version of mozilla-sunbird which works perfectly with the fr.xpi, whereas the new mozilla-sunbird does not yet, and I have also been able to help one of our members to get an older version of addlocale which has worked perfectly for him, getting the swedish locales in his system.

Without apt-sources-updates I would not have found so easily the slowest mirrors. So be it for the faster or the slower, I would like apt-sources-updates to be re-integrated to the repositories.

Regards,
Mélodie

So then why don't you go to Advanced Users > Coders and ask if someone will redesign it for you?

Hi,
I have it working perfect in my main machines that I have kept up to date for... not sure, since 2009 I think. My system is the first Openbox version I pulled out of your Lxde from this time, I have not reinstalled it since. The reverse : I have remastered it to install it to the new (old) T60 I just bought, and it works perfect there.

What would be the need for re-designing ? Do you think it does not work in the new versions published this summer ?
