[SOLVED] No Internet Connection tho Signals Say It Is
« on: July 14, 2011, 09:49:45 AM »
I use KDE 2011 and have the latest updates.

This morning I decided to use something else in the Sessions. I think it was Xfce.  The internet worked fine.
Then I decided to switch back. I logged out and chose KDE in Sessions.  I brought up Firefox, but the connection did not occur. I noticed that the signal at the bottom of the page saying I was connected was green.  And also all the lights of the modem box were blinking as usual. I tried Konq and Chrome browsers and the same thing happened .. no connection.
I rebooted and tried all again. Still no connection.

So I booted into Windows. My booting back into Windows is always iffy as I have reported in another topic.  After 2 tries I reached there and had to wait about 15 minutes for everything to settle.  But I was connected and that is where I am writing from now.

I am wondering why I did not have connection in Linux even though the signals showed I was connected.
Of course something may have happened in between the time I booted into Windows and I might just go back to Linux and everything will be fine.  But since I have so much trouble going back and forth, I will not return to Linux until I receive an answer.

Someone might tell me to check this or that if I still don't connect. Of course if it starts getting dark here, I may have to return sooner.  Don't like being out in the dark.  Especially don't like being in Windows in the dark.  :o

Hi ms_meme - sometimes it's helpful right clicking on the network icon and choosing Disconnect and then wait a minute and then r/click again and choose Connect

Alternatively, right click the icon and choose Configure Network (select your network type) and "walk through" the connection process by pressing the Next button until you get to the last window which says something like "Do you want to start the connection now?"  press Next again and it should "reconnect" you.......

Did you try any other network related apps - do you have Akregator or a stand-alone email app? (not browser email)

I think I can do the 1st suggestion.  But on the alternatively:  Not sure what kind of connection I have?? Plain old connection....but what is it called?

I have Thunderbird....but really never bring it up.

It'll probably be called Wired Ethernet, (see below) Note - it it's not Ethernet or Wireless it may be Cable Modem

Another quick'ish way is to right click and choose Monitor Network - as well as the network type it shows the data throughput/speeds etc (see image)

When I returned all was well. :D
So thank goodness I didn't have to try anything.  But I did Rclick & look at the options and will try not to panic if it happens again.
Thanks for responding while it was still daylight.  ;)
