PCLinuxOS KDE MiniMe 2011.07 is now available for download
« on: July 14, 2011, 05:50:12 AM »
PCLinuxOS KDE MiniMe 2011.07 for 32 bit computers (works on 64 bit computers too) is now available for download.

What’s new:

Kernel – The kernel was updated to version 2.6.38.8-3pclos. Additional kernels are available from our repositories such as a PAE kernel for computers with more than 4 gigs of memory. A BFS kernel for maximum desktop performance and a standard kernel with group scheduling enabled.

Xorg - Xorg server was updated to version 1.10.3. Mesa updated to 7.10.3 and libdrm to version 2.4.26. This update brings enhancements to the PCLinuxOS desktop including speed, 3D desktop support for most Intel, Nvidia and AMD/ATi video cards, better font rendering, black screen fixes for most Nvidia cards, better Flash playback and more. The most recent versions of Nvidia and AMD/ATi video drivers are included on the LiveCD and automatically configured for you.

Toolchain – Gcc software compiler was updated to version 4.5.2 and glibc updated to 2.10.1. Locales were updated to version 2.12.1.

Package Manager – RPM was updated to version 4.8.1. apt-get and the Synaptic Package Manager were also updated to work with the updated rpm packages.

Theme Update – The 2011 release received a full makeover. PCLinuxOS features a new brush metal theme including updates to grub, plymouth, kdm, kdesplash and application splash screens.

Remastering Tools – mylivecd was updated to work with the latest release. mylivecd added the ability to install PCLinuxOS from the boot menu without having to go to the desktop first. There are 3 compression schemes available now for remastering your installation. xz maximum compression, xz normal compression and gzip for fast compression. xz max takes longer to generate the LiveCD but produces the most compressed image where as gzip will create a LiveCD fairly quick but the compressed image will be larger. mylivecd can also generate a LiveDVD with up to 4 gigs of compressed data. Usually a 10-12 gig installation will compress into a 4 gig DVD.

Software – Basic KDE 4.6.5 desktop and configuration tools. This is a barebones installation. No other software included on the the LiveCD. This release is for advanced users who know what software they want and how to install and configure it. Over 13,000 software packages available to customize your MiniMe installation.

This is what I've been waiting for! Downloaded, installed, updated, configured and personalized, and populated with apps I use... all within an hour.

It's like my new install is what I've been using all these time but with the assurance that it is clean.

Thanks once again for PCLinuxOS, Tex. ;)

I must have tried 50 or more desktops in my time with Linux ( for myself & others). I have never run a more professional, solid & functional one than PCLinuxOS Minime!!

Another superb effort from a true Linux master. Thanks Tex.  :)

Thank you for a great work!  :)

I am downloading it right now.
EDIT: Installed! :)

Can somebody tell me, what is the most important differences between PCLinuxOS KDE MiniMe and the original PCLinuxOS? What is "better" in MiniMe and what is "better" in the original desktop version?

Is it possible to install all the software that I find in the original repositories in MiniMe as well? I find only a few programs in Synaptic.  :-\

I am using email (preferring Kmail) , OpenOffice, surfing a lot, viewing pdf, GIMP, Kicad (graphic CAD program for electronics). I will start using some development tools (for C and C++) and QT. I also want to localize to Swedish language.

EDIT 2: The second time I reloaded the repo's I found all the software.  :)

It looks like you'll do fine with Synaptic and adding applications.

Now to answer your questions with what I think is the answer by many in choosing to install Minime instead of the standard KDE. Many of us like to start adding applications instead of removing. For instance, I do not like to use Firefox and Thunderbird; I prefer to use Chromium or Rekonq (both webkit) as my Internet browsers and KMail for my email client. In Minime, I do not have to remove apps that I do not use; in the standard KDE, I would have to remove apps and install others.

Another obvious difference is the Minime is more updated than the standard KDE although as time goes by of course either install will require similar updates.

There is no "better" between the two; it is mostly what one prefers (Linux, your right to choose) ... and both were created by the magical wand of Texstar. :)

In my own personal view, MiniMe boots faster, runs faster, and is just better, because instead of having a lot of programs I never use at all, I can build it exactly as I want it to be, all all in less than a hour's time. I am a computer repair man, and most of the machines I work on are Windows. It takes me up to six hours to install, configure, update, all service packs, virus protection, and cleaner software, and all of those reboots drive me nuts. Thankfully, I am converted a few customers to Linux. No one has wanted PCLinuxOS so far, even though I run it on my own box, and am happy to show off how fast and stable it is. One guy insisted on Fedora 14 Gnome, the other wanted Ubuntu. I don't mind, Linux is Linux. Linux distros, with the GUI installation, and ease of partitioning these day, not to mention the extra free software that can be had, is calling to those who have became tired of Microsoft and their antics.
