testers wanted for new version of update-notifier 1.3
« on: July 11, 2011, 12:52:32 PM »
Since many users update-notifier miss, I've been looking for a solution and hopefully found.
I've used instead of zenity yad, this was not much changed for version 1.2.
Now I want to check the script of course.

has anyone the locales?

I hope that's OK

Update-Notifier must get new translation, all old files are lost...
You can use bash_trans to create a pot file of update-notifier. Open /usr/share/apps/update-notifier/ and try a right click on update-notifier, and update-notifier-launch. Use Translation Bash scripts, next step is, open it with poedit and translate it...

Good luck

ps.: update-notifier works here so far well...

I need instructions on installing the package, please :)

Something like
rpm -Utf ~/Downloads ~/melodies_notifier
./update-notifier

 :)

In deutsch:

Nun alles klaro?

In deutsch aus/

Installed!
It required yad dependency and I installed it.

But it still wouldn't install by right-click in Dolphin

but my lovely Krusader did it ;D

Shows the updated and new packages.

Minor glitch: if you choose option "Update with Synaptic" the well known "You must run this program as the root user." warning appears and Synaptic doesn't start. Otherwise Synaptic starts normally from the menu.
This is on LXDE fully updated.

Yo man,
I am aware. :)

Synaptic starts fine here from the panel, from the menu and from Terminal. But from Update-notifier it throws that message and doesn't start.

Here's the command line for Synaptic in the Menu:
gksu -u root /usr/sbin/synaptic

Well, some analysis ;)
In Terminal both
/usr/sbin/synaptic
/usr/bin/synaptic

give the same error but
gksu -u root /usr/sbin/synaptic
gksu -u root /usr/bin/synaptic

do well.

Don't want to change things because they work, sorry.

But what I noted is that from update-notifier I can open Synaptic and can't "Install by Synaptic".
Here are some lines from the update-notifier script about this:
lines 329 - 337
Quote
if echo "$RET" | grep $"Open Synaptic package manager"; then
      gksu synaptic
      UPDATE_REFRESH="true"
   fi

   if echo "$RET" | grep $"Install updates using Synaptic"; then
      $SYNAPTIC_UPDATE && yad --info --height=150 --title="Update-Notifier" --timeout 3 --text=$"\nSynaptic is done. "
      UPDATE_REFRESH="true"
   fi
This is the menu and the second item gives the error but the first - no.

Now
lines 80 - 84
Quote
if [ "$SYNAPTIC_HIDE_MAIN" == "true" ]; then
      SYNAPTIC_UPDATE="synaptic --hide-main-window --non-interactive -o Synaptic::AskRelated=true --update-at-startup --dist-upgrade-mode"
   else
      SYNAPTIC_UPDATE="synaptic --update-at-startup --dist-upgrade-mode"
   fi

May be gksu is needed to be added?
like
SYNAPTIC_UPDATE="gksu synaptic --hide-main-window --non-interactive -o Synaptic::AskRelated=true --update-at-startup --dist-upgrade-mode"

We may now rewrite everything, but the call of Synaptic should also function normally. Previously it went.
But I want to wait, even if someone responds to the use of consolehelper.
