For reference:

System:  Dell Latitude D620 notebook computer, 2 GB RAM, 500 GB hard drive, Intel Mobile 945GM video card (probably the most important detail here).

Software:  PCLinuxOS 2010.07 but fully updated.

Problem: After a recent update, I noticed that certain desktop effects were disabled.  Starting "Configure Your Desktop", I found I was unable to use OpenGL and had to shift to XRender for about a week while I noodled on this one.  OpenGL had been working just fine before the upgrade, so I got to wondering what had changed.

Corrective Action(s):

I followed Texstar's advice about reinstalling x11-server-common given here:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,92107.msg773903.html#msg773903

but this was to no avail.  Finally I began wondering if the video card configuration had changed, and I dimly remembered having to set up a custom driver for this a while back to get OpenGL working in the first place.

Sure enough, I went back into the PCLinuxOS Control Center and replaced the "i810 and later" driver from the Intel portion of the list with the more generic "intel" driver from the Xorg section at the bottom of the list.  Now OpenGL and my desktop effects of choice appear to be working.

I have noticed a glitch with certain visualizations in Clementine causing KWin to throw a segmentation fault, though...  Perhaps this is not the end of the matter?  I have been just restarting KWin when this happens.  If I get more time, perhaps I'll compile a list of the visualizations that cause this to happen.  (I'd have to go through the nearly 200 visualizations one at a time and I don't have that kinda time right now.)

Hope this helps someone else with this problem, and that together we may move this issue further along the path.

Some further info for xorg and intel and clementine.    I might
bugzilla to xorg but I don't know what to bugzilla yet.

Have a good one.

It helped me! Thanks. Have an Acer Aspire One netbook with the same graphics chipset. Was only able to use XRender and it was a wee bit slow!

I have Intel video too.  I also had to use XRender, instead of OpenGL.  But my system rocks with XRender.

+3 on having to select xorg intel driver for Mobile 4 graphics after 2010.12 KDE upgrade.  Not sure about why this is but it works and all seems fine.
[UPDATE]: This seems to have worked until I created other users and has now returned. Using xrender now seems to cause more problems than OpenGL and the deeper problem seems related to kdm (k display manager) not releasing resources when loging out as described in another thread on this forum.

Great!  Glad to be of service.  How do you like that Aspire One?  Is it fast enough to do KDE well?  (We're looking at an 11.6" model of the Aspire One to augment our growing fleet of netbooks where I work.  I'll be managing them, so, yeah, it's more than a personal interest.)  PM me if you please, since this seems to be a divergence from topic.  Thanks!

I'm going to go ahead and mark this [SOLVED] instead of [Solved??].  The recent update to KDE 4.6.4 seems to have cured the problem I was having with Clementine's Project M visualizations.  Everything seems to be moving along well (at least for me).  I see another thread where at least one other user is still having trouble with this configuration.  I think this is going to govern my choice of hardware in my next laptop:  the intel video and sound hardware just seem a bit too fussy (and the video is somewhat underpowered, too).

I think my next laptop will have an NVidia graphics adapter.  I just like their stuff.
