Copy and paste the last number of lines in your next post .....  those that refer to the camera.

ll header: ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:00:22:2d:68:3f:61:08:06
usb 5-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
usb 5-2: New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=0960
usb 5-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=1, SerialNumber=0
usb 5-2: Product: Camera
Linux video capture interface: v2.00
gspca: v2.12.0 registered
gspca: probing 046d:0960
gspca: video0 created
usbcore: registered new interface driver sunplus

That is what I got. Now I have very new Logitech webcam that I purchased for Win 7, (shamefully hanging head, but it is for the wifes computer) and I plug this one in and the only program that does not work with is cheese and camorama webcam veiwer. However it does work well with Skype, Kopete and wxcam. I unplug that one and I plug in the 420 and I get the same errors. I think it has something to do with the frame rate because that is the error message I keep getting with wxcam with the 420. I am thinking they removed the older fram rate setting to possible allow for the new UVC's and all. I dunno. I am only guessing.

Any more Idea's?

The assumption is that you are using a 2.6.38.8 kernel as older kernels may not be suitable.

So what was the result of running, after getting the dmesg result posted above ...

1. Kopete ?

2. VLC (using Video for Linux) ?

3. Did the camera work or were there error messages? Post any error messages.

4. Is there something that must be done to put the cam into webcam mode?

Note: according to the info I have here the Sunplus driver is definitely the correct one ..... this is from 'sunplus.c' of a driver I had downloaded some time ago

   {USB_DEVICE(0x04a5, 0x3008), BS(SPCA533, 0)},

You could also try using the cam in Skype using the following to launch Skype ...

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skype

I did try Kopete and nothing for the 420. With WxCam it said to change the settings in the Preferences for frame format. I tried every one and nothing worked. Each time I changed the setting I had to close the app and restart it.

with Cheese it see's the camera but just a black screen is displayed.

I don't know how to set it up in VLC, and Skype is also a black screen. Camorama just gives an error to check the camera to make sure it is plugged in. ( of course it is)
There is a switch on the back to go from photo to video and it is on video. In Win it does not matter what it is set to it will take pictures or video in any switch setting. I think it is strictly when the camera is on battery power. Speaking of batteries, in win you do not have to have fully charged batteries for the camera to work. Would it need it in Linux?

What next?

With the camera plugged in, in a terminal do

ls /dev/vid*

and copy and paste the command and result in next post.

When doing the tests you must ensure that you have only one application trying to access the camera at any time. Whichever app is first takes control of the camera (whether it can display the results or not) and thus trying with a second app will fail, as it cannot access the camera.

That is not telling me anything!  :(
Is the camera listed or not?
What driver is listed for the camera?
What is displayed in the video window?
Did you try adjusting the sliders to see if that is what was needed to get a display?

Quote
I don't know how to set it up in VLC

Do .....  VLC - Media - Open Capture Device - (Capture Mode) Video for Linux - (Video device name) /dev/video0 - Play
Report result .....   including any error text exactly (copy & paste into next post).

Quote
Skype is also a black screen

Using the standard launch or using the alternative I posted?
Clarify please.
Copy & Paste the command and the ouput in your next post.

Try all the tests with the switch in video AND in photo position.
Report exactly any differences that appear - particularly error messages.

Does that mean I have to restart the pc every time I change apps? Or just close the app kills the usage and you can open another? Because I was able to close one app and then open another app when I had the other cam plugged into the system (This was the other newer web cam I spoke of before) and it worked switching between the different apps. Cheese, Skype, Kopete, and wxcam worked fine switching from one to another. Even the Camorama worked to an extent, but all it showed was a weird very dark highlighted like black screen.

I also tried opening it up with the VLC like you suggested and this is what I got.

Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'v4l2:///dev/video0 - Play'. Check the log for details.

So did I mess things up? Is it hopeless? Did I do stuff wrong? Sorry.

No, you did nothing wrong that I saw  ;)

All the questions are to try to get a good idea of the behaviour on your PC, so each has a purpose and the more detailed the report of events the better we can realise what is happening.

No there is no need to reboot, just ensure that only one app that uses the webcam is running at any time.

The alternative command to launch Skype should be copy/pasted into a terminal.
Code: [Select]
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skypeIt is likely that this will produce some report in the terminal which should be copied to a post also.

Just to be sure .....  the entry in 'Device' is     /dev/video0   .....  and then click on the Play button.

What about the part I mentioned in the report about it being hidden?

I am not seeing where the problem lies  :(

When the camera is plugged in a device is created   /dev/video0

According to dmesg the expected driver is loaded.

It is listed in the LSUSB output.

I would like you to confirm the kernel in use with this command .....

uname -r

and post back the output.

Have you tried this camera while running a liveCD of  2011.6  PCLOS?

Sorry but I have run out of suggestions for now   :(

Have you found anything on line from other Linux users about this camera?

regards.

Is it possible that apps are seeing the camera but settings such as brightness are simply set to zero?

I don't think I have done this, will try and see what happens. UPDATE- Tried this as mentioned above and it did something in VLC but I am unsure I think it actually recognized the camera but I was not able to see anything on the camera. When I pressed play after inserting /dev/video0 where I was told to place it, the screen went away with no error message but I did not know how to make it display a window for the camera. AND as it stands right now I just tried this in the current VLC and it did nothing. All I can see is that little cone on the screen nothing else appears.
