[solved] Dial-Up: KPPP Makes Dead Connection

PCLOS 2011.6 KDE

POTS dial-up

KPPP indicates it has made a successful connection but it's absolutely dead; cannot connect to any site with Firefox.

(I tried several different access numbers for at least two different ISPs; the result was the same in each case- as described above)

Note that I did not have this problem with an earlier release of the main KDE edition of PCLOS ( almost a year ago). Nor did I have any such problem with GPPP in the Gnome edition of PCLOS.

Do you have a firewall up? Turn it off and check if it makes any difference.

I had set-up the Firewall in the PCLOS Control Center for interface wlan0 (when I first connected to WiFi) but never for ppp0.

turn it off and check if things still dont work. The firewall is not supposed to block out going traffic but it was blocking it with somebody else who was also connecting using ppp connection.

I asked you to turn it off to check if your problem is the same as his or if its different

Okay, turning the firewall off seems to have solved the problem.

But what now? I obviously don't want to stay connected for any length of time without having a firewall on.

(Remember, since it's dialup, there's no NAT protection)

Firewalls are not supposed to block outgoing traffic and i think there is a bug in pclinuxos firewall and it blocks outgoing ppp interface connections even when it is configured to monitor another interface.

open the terminal, type "su" and then press enter and then enter root's password when asked and then run these two commands.

iptables -I OUTPUT -o ppp0 -j ACCEPT
service iptables save

Those two commands will add a rule to your firewall to allow outgoing traffic on ppp0. Run them and you should be able to use the web with a firewall on.

ps:
copy and paste the command to make sure you dont mistype them

Okay, those commands seem to have worked. Thank you again, muungwana. Your help is much appreciated.

Has this bug been officially noted?

(Now, if only I could solve the erratic behavior and other problems I've been having with KPPP but that's for a different thread that I may start if the problems persist.)

i think somebody up the ranks have already seen this thread and the other one where i first noted the problem and i think they are aware of it but i am not certain. Packagers usually read most of the threads and they discover and solve bugs from them.

Glad you have your problem solved. The forum will always be here when you decide to discuss the other problems you are having.
