I finally got 2011.6 to install and run ok.
I reduced my Phenom II from it's normal speed of 3.1 GHz to 2.6 GHz and my Memory from 800 MHz to 677 MHz and all of a sudden pclos installed fine.
This sort of reminds me of 16 years ago when we would reduce the speed of our over clocked Pentium I computers to install operating systems and programs.
Maybe my CPU is a little burnt, it is at least 2 years old I think.
I kinda wonder if the compression programs are not the problem for me. I had this problem with other "advanced" distros before.
Thanks for your attempts to help.

My computer runs fine at up to 3.4 GHz but starts to make text errors at 3.8 GHz. During last summer I had reduced the speed to 3.1 GHz because of potential heat problems in my apartment like up to 88 degrees F some days.

Hey jamesam1243, glad to hear back from you.  Great that you got the install done, I wonder if now that PCLOS is fully installed on your machine that you would be able to tune your hardware back to normal spec?

omskates, thanks for replying  :)

Well, the thing is that I like to run as a LiveCD a lot to reduce cumulative errors on hard drive installs and all the logs that pile up that I forget about.
At 3.1 GHz the livecd itself was giving me a frozen screen. I might be able to go up to 2.8 GHz but I have found that the only thing that needs the higher speed is high definition video using xv which is only marginally ok, so I need to run my GF 260 in vdpau anyway for high definition.

Sysinfo for 'localhost': Linux 2.6.38.8-pclos3.pae.bfs running KDE Development Platform 4.6.5 (4.6.5), CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 550 at 2612 MHz (5223 bogomips), HD: 8449/10439GB, RAM: 2318/8039MB, 216 proc's, 1.22h up

Right now I am running a newly modified livecd from my main drive.

I'm afraid I'm not much help with your hardware quirkiness.  However I might have a suggestion for you to look into.  Have you considered making a small partition on the HDD and doing a frugal install?  You would basically be running live from the HDD partition rather than CD.  You copy over the vmlinuz, .gz and .sfs files etc. from the iso then set up booting options.  Persistence could be used and upgrades would simply involve replacing the necessary files from a new iso or remaster.  Do you Copy2Ram when running live CD?

I hear cron screaming to help solve that problem!
