The machine I have in mind has only 768m of ram.

I think is 1 GB and that should be enough, in the worst case you have a swap partition.

BTW In the machine that has LXDE I have 1GB and never uses the swap.

I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

Same here... I have a 1 gig pentium 3 1 Ghz cpu and the machine with Firefox running with 10 - 15 tabs never used more them 500 - 600 megs of ram. I never used more then 750 megs that's for sure ;).

Thanks for the additional comments, suggestions and welcomes!

Exploder.... it's a small world isn't it!  :)

We'll I got antsy and loaded the distro into Virtualbox to get a better
feel for it. I gave the VM 1 core and 768meg of ram. I Loaded the
updates and installed some programs. Then I managed to mangle the guest additions.

The system became extremely slow. It took several seconds to get it to
respond to anything. No excessive memory usage or cpu demand, just
a horrible lag. I figured I must have loaded the wrong
file and shut her down.

I came back after dinner to undo the damage. Deleted the GA, and fired her up.
All good... Even full screen,  so I didn't mess with getting the GA back up and running.
Everything was quick and very responsive.
I started up htop, which I had installed, abiword, tuxpaint, firefox with 3 tabs
open and a youtube video running. All good... no swapping!
Very Sweet... Dude!

I closed everything down except htop and stepped out of the room for a moment,
This did not go unnoticed...
My grandson had came over, closed the terminal, fired up firefox, and found his
way to a game site.

Yeah, he's gonna take to the change well. Just some cosmetics for me to do.
This is gonna be real easy!

Only found a couple of very minor issues but I'll comment on them after the install.
It's getting late and hard to type.

Cheers!

Is this for LXDE? I cannot believe that...

I have a 256 MB machine which used to be a 192 MB machine and LXDE was running perfectly well on it... I would dare to say that the minimum for LXDE would be 128 even. Recommended would be 512... 768 is really plenty.

1 gig... If KDE4 minimum is 512... and recommended is 1 gig... it would be really weird to recommend the same amount of ram for the much lighter LXDE...

I mean depends on what You are planning to do with it... I am running server with 256 MB of ram and maximum amount of RAM that it's using is:

Quote
[andrzejl@icsserver ~]$ free -m
total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:           247        237         10          0         19         61
-/+ buffers/cache:        156         91
Swap:         1019          0       1019
[andrzejl@icsserver ~]$

and trust me when I say that the site is not really very popular BUT there is plenty going on on that machine...

Just my opinion.

"Recommended minimum" is not "absolute minimum." :D Yes, LXDE will run on less RAM, but as each machine is different, some of them will not run as well, thus the minimum recommendation.

I just put LXDE on my HP mini and I really like it, too.  Very snappy and everything is working with little or no bother at all!

I finally got around to doing the install yesterday.
I wasn't able to be around much last weekend and I needed
to be home to make sure all is were working well and programs
weren't forgotten to be installed.
It took about 10 minutes to install, then I did the updates
and installed a few things.
I must say that this was the easiest distro I've ever installed
and configured.  As smooth as silk. ZERO issues!

Thanks Neal, Tex and who ever else work on this.
You guys made my life easy.  ;D

After the install I added an account for the 'big guy'.
I got it all setup and added his bookmarks for him. So i played
with it for a while until he got up. After breakfast and some
TV he was ready. (here comes the acid test).

I rolled up a chair as he booted the machine.  Right away
he knew something was different. The loggin screen was
different and I walked him thru it. (that was my only interaction.)
He looked around and the LX panel was familiar to him.
He went to the menu, found Abiword and launched it. Tried it
out... all good. Minimized, launched Tuxpaint, tried it... all good
here too.  He then launched Firefox and saw that it was different.
(He's been used to 3.something). He found the search bar, typed
in a search, went there and launched a game. All good again.
He closed Firefox then restarted it. He looked to see if all
his bookmarks were there... All good. (Do I have a 5 year old
tester on my hands?)
Next, off to PBS kids. We both noticed that the video was
sharper and clearer then ever before. (I must not of had the right
drivers before).
After this he looked at me, gave me a huge smile, a big
bear hug and some kisses, then bounced up it down in shear joy.

This was worth more to me than any words could possible convey.

He used the machine on and off all day.. and quite happily.

Thanks again to all that made this possible!

You have made young child and his grampa very happy.  ;D ;D
