Very Impressed!
« on: July 04, 2011, 12:33:48 PM »
I've been using Linux Mint since Mint 7.
I currently have Mint 10 (gnome) installed on an i5,
and Mint 10 LXDE installed on an older AMD machine.

I knew that there are many people having problems with the newest
version, but when the LXDE rc came out I couldn't resist trying it.

It failed to load the desktop and left me at the command line.
It seems to be a problem with the version of Xorg and the drivers
packaged is this latest spin.
It tried it on 3 desktops and 1 laptop.
Only on the i5 did it start up properly.

Needless to say I was disappointed, especially since LXDE is
targeted mainly for older/low spec machines.

Anyway, having read that PCLOS has very good hardware support,
I thought I'd gave the latest LXDE release a spin.

Wow!
Very impressive. Nice, clean and professional.
A lot of detail when into this.
It works on ALL 4 machines and detected all my hardware correctly.

I think I have the perfect home for it on 1 machine, and possibly the
laptop as well.

Just 1 question...
What is the memory usage after a cold boot?
I'm showing 140m with Mint 10 LXDE.
Mint 8 LXDE was about 117m.

Thanks!

And BTW, I believe this is the best implementation
of LXDE that I've seem.
Excellent Job!

Welcome vger7 I'm an LXDE user myself and this is the best implementation you can get
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

Welcome to the forum vger7 enjoy Your time here.

I will answer Your question with a question. Do You really care that much about ram usage when the price is "no hardware problems"?

Regards :).

Thank you, vger7.

To see your memory usage, open lxterminal and enter the command top.

Or use free -m.

Thanks one and all for the welcome  ;D

Andy,
Yes I do care about memory usage.
The machine I have in mind has only 768m of ram.
My young grandson uses it and usually has firefox,
abiword and tuxpaint all running at the same time.
The less memory the system is using,
the more he has available for running apps.
He has some disabilities and can get very frustrated
at times.

Neal,
You've done a really great job here!
(I thought I saw 97m when I started to post,
but it's gone now).
In any-case, it looks like I'm gonna do a fresh install next Saturday.

Well folks, it's time for me to get the ribs prepped and fire
up the coals.

Thanx a bunch and
have a great 4th everyone!

vger7, well it's nice to see you here! I think you and your grandson will be very happy using the PCLinuxOS LXDE edition. There is some great work going on around here and you will enjoy having a rolling release. You might want to ask about some games for your grandson so he does not get bored with pbskids.org. I am very glad you gave the LXDE edition a try and I am real happy all your hardware is working well.

It's based on a good work but without the right knowledge and attitude... the iso wouldn't be half this good. Trust me I know...

Yes I do care about memory usage.

The same here.
I just opened a 500 KB file with LibreOffice and a 1.6 MB jpg file with GIMP. I can freely manipulate the document, the picture and post here by Chromium. No inconvenience. :)
