Thanks for your responses.
I have reloaded synaptic & done a full update as suggested.
Although there was some X11 material brought in, the three
gripes still exist. In the original order, I add:
1a. If two requests for keyboard is a feature not a problem,
I need more enlightenment. I'd rather not keep doing this.
1b. My 'monitor' is the 1366x768 flat screen of my Dell 1545.
Neither the auto-detect nor setting thru the Control Center
have any effect on this. I can, on a per-session basis, use
the LXDE command lxrandr and set the resolution and refresh
rate, but these are lost on shut-down.
2. Still no LibreOffice after a lot of downloading and smoke,
but no final product. This is a must-have. The other gripes
are just nits.
3. Knoppix 6.4.4 uses 4 xscreensaver 5.11-1 +b1 synaptic units,
rather than the 5.14 4 xscreensaver units, and only 2 of
the 4 names agree. I think a gui to set up the slide-show
is missing in the PCLinuxOS units, or I can't find it.
4. A new note here. Like Knoppix, I find PCLinuxOS's alsa
needs a little help to get going. If you call up alsamixer
on a new system, you find that most of the default settings
are set to unworkable values. In Knoppix, I fix this with
a little /etc/rc.local tweak. Another nit.
