PCLinuxOS 2011.06 LiveUSB, three minor problems
« on: July 02, 2011, 06:22:08 PM »
Greetings, I'm new here.

I am just getting started on PCLinuxOS 2011 LiveCD & LiveUSB.

I am well-acquainted with Knoppix 6.4.4, and have a 2 Gb LiveUSB
which works very well. Until now I had not found another LiveUSB
that works well with my Broadcom wifi.

I've made a PCLinuxOS LiveCD and from that a 2 Gb LiveUSB. Most
things seem to work as expected, but I am having a few problems
that I could use some help on:

1. Set parameters are not retained on re-boot for keyboard and
monitor settings.  Most other settings are retained ok.

2. LibreOffice Mgr does not install LibreOffice components.
I have LibreOffice on my 2 Gb Knoppix with room to spare.

3. I can't seem to find a 'carousel' option to use my own jpgs
for a slide-show screen-saver.

I'd appreciate any helpful comments that might be offered in regard
to any or all of these minor difficulties. Thanks in advance.

Hello utu

Welcome here.
For 1 and 2, hold on a little. Someone with experience in this will answer.

For 3
The program carousel is not in the repos.
You can do 2 things.
a--wait till you can do a " package suggest "
b--post a link to where the program is ( on the www ) , then me or someone else will make a package request

Have fun here
Xx

as in what direction we are moving.

If you use the 'Persistent' boot option, then your changes are saved for the next 'Persistent' session.
You will still get the ksyboard prompt on boot up, but your chosen keyboard type will be highlighted instead of the default one, if different.
The hardware autodetect is active and so I guess the monitor is re-detected on each boot.
That *should* be correct on each boot .... so a better explanation of why you might need to change the monitor setting might help someone explain what could be done.

Before doing any application installation, you should, in persistent mode, do a full update of the OS using Synaptic.
After that LO Manager should be updated and install the current version.

Thanks for your responses.

I have reloaded synaptic & done a full update as suggested.
Although there was some X11 material brought in, the three
gripes still exist. In the original order, I add:

1a. If two requests for keyboard is a feature not a problem,
I need more enlightenment. I'd rather not keep doing this.

1b. My 'monitor' is the 1366x768 flat screen of my Dell 1545.
Neither the auto-detect nor setting thru the Control Center
have any effect on this.  I can, on a per-session basis, use
the LXDE command lxrandr and set the resolution and refresh
rate, but these are lost on shut-down.

2. Still no LibreOffice after a lot of downloading and smoke,
but no final product. This is a must-have. The other gripes
are just nits.

3. Knoppix 6.4.4 uses 4 xscreensaver 5.11-1 +b1 synaptic units,
rather than the 5.14 4 xscreensaver units, and only 2 of
the 4 names agree. I think a gui to set up the slide-show
is missing in the PCLinuxOS units, or I can't find it.

4. A new note here.  Like Knoppix, I find PCLinuxOS's alsa
needs a little help to get going.  If you call up alsamixer
on a new system, you find that most of the default settings
are set to unworkable values. In Knoppix, I fix this with
a little /etc/rc.local tweak. Another nit.

Regards.

No idea what you mean by 'two requests'.
On the live session I am asked to confirm my keyboard on each boot .....  once. All is required is to hit the Enter button if I am using persistence.

Dunno why you might be setting refresh rate on an LCD panel .....

Try the LXDE section of the forum for LXDE specific details.

Look to your environment .....  others do not appear to have that problem.

I know nothing of Knoppix ......  it is about 5 years since I last ran & installed it.
