You are not saying HOW you attempted to access the data.

I use this to access IDE, SATA and notebook drives. Works great!

how are you connecting the hard disk to the linux machine?

the hard disk should be seen under dolphin on the left side, as another partition/external device

about the dead laptop, after removing the hard disk, did you tried booting it?

i put the hard drive in a portable case. it is recognized in windows 7 laptop, but not in linux. not in devices. it should show up on my home. it doesn't. tried also on my xp. also shows up.  i can get the data, but i sure would like to see it in my linux

can you boot up the hard dive on another computer??? how would you do it??? Do you have to change the recognition of your laptop from harddrive to usb?? if so i haven't tried that trick. It would be easier to figure out the data that i need to get. any help would be appreciated.

if you can view the HD on windows, perhaps the connected device isn't being mounted properly. Have you looked at PCC > Local disk > manage disk partitions?

Why do you think it should show up in your home? What provisions have you tried to make to have it do so?
