Temperature Monitor not working in LXDE 2011.6
« on: July 02, 2011, 12:01:02 PM »
Hi all,
When I add the temperature monitor to my panel, it displays NA. Is this a kernel problem, or do I need to point it to the right sensor in the temperature monitor settings? Thanks.

what I had to do is install "lm_sensors and "gkrellm to get any temp sensors working.. think it has something to do with the new kernels as to seeing the sensor modules ..??

if you decide to go with lm_sensors .. don't forget to run "sensors-detect" in root konsole and answer yes to all .. then start your gkrellm..

the see through theme is in the extra themes for gkrellm  called invisible ..

OK, that will show my cpu temp in gkrellm, but the LXDE panel temperature monitor still not working. I am running LXDE in Unity Linux, Express Linux, and BoxPup Puppy linux, and all 3 of those work fine in regard to the temperature monitor. No additional tweaking needed. Just add it to the panel and there is my temperature. I am not trying to knock PCLOS, just pointing out that this could be a possible fix for additional releases of the LXDE version in the future.

that is incorrect info you have posted.. other distros are having the same problems..

and as soon as the lxde guys get around to fixing it we should get an update ..
this is what the monitor used before ..which has changed now

You are right indeed. I just test ran the latest Express Linux and it has the same problem.

Hello,

After running sensors-detect as root I got:
"Sorry, no sensors were detected.
This is relatively common on laptops, where thermal management is
handled by ACPI rather than the OS."

What can I do in order to monitor the temperature of an HP Pavilion dv6 Core i7 laptop?
Best regards

The package gnome-sensors-applet has support for ACPI thermal zones, via the Linux kernel ACPI modules. The package is available in Synaptic. For quick command line feedback, enter acpi -t in a terminal.
Bare metal                           VBox
AMD Athlon 7750 Dual-Core    Single core
4GiB RAM                              1GiB RAM
nVidia GeForce FX 5200          64MB video
LXDE 32bit                            KDE 64bit

Thanks a lot Djohnston,

1.- I installed also the battery monitor applet, which shows a little green line, 100% :) but in the place of the temperature monitor is "NA"  I have the ACPI package  ???

2.- I tried to modify the temperature Monitor settings of the applet, but in "Automatic sensor location" does not work, if I uncheck this option I have not found what to enter into the field "Sensor" because "acpi -t" do not work here.

3.- with the command:
[joejac@localhost ~]$ acpi -t
Thermal 0: ok, 68.0 degrees C
[joejac@localhost ~]$ acpi -t
Thermal 0: ok, 69.0 degrees C

In the console it works, temperature is fluctuating among 68 or 69 Celsius, with an external fan underneath the laptop, so not bad if considering this recommendation here:
"Our recommendation is to keep Intel Core i7 CPUs under 80C. That gives you a healthy margin in case you’re running a heavy load on your CPU on a particularly hot summer day. Due to the manufacturing process of Intel Core i7, and the improved power management features, we’re comfortable at up to 80C, even though this would be considered a very hot temperature with an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU."

Just I can not place my hand in the left down side because is some hot.

If I turn off the Windows 7 VM (4 CPUS+4GB RAM) and have only LXDE Host with 4 Firefox tabs, the temperature goes down 10 degrees:
Thermal 0: ok, 59.0 degrees C  (with the fan cooler below)

I guess "Thermal 0" means the first CPU temperature, right?, But what about the other 7 CPUs?

Please see this:
[joejac@localhost ~]$ acpi -V
Battery 0: Full, 100%, rate information unavailable
Battery 0: design capacity 5100 mAh, last full capacity 4608 mAh = 90%
Adapter 0: on-line
Thermal 0: ok, 59.0 degrees C
Thermal 0: trip point 0 switches to mode hot at temperature 105.0 degrees C
Thermal 0: trip point 1 switches to mode passive at temperature 95.0 degrees C
Cooling 0: Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 1: Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 2: Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 3: Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 4: Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 5: Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 6: Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 7: Processor 0 of 10

3.1 How can I make the gnome applet to read the temperature sensor?

4.- I have also found this Omnibook Configuration Tools & Patches: http://sourceforge.net/projects/omke/
"This is a set of small programs and patches to configure the advanced features of some laptops, such as enabling the extra onetouch/multimedia keys, console blanking, battery and temperature reporting, etc. Many HPs and Toshiba Satellites are supported."

Omnibook is not in the repositories, but I understand, it is still in beta.

Any additional data is very much appreciated.

Best regards
joejac

According to the man page, -t is to "show thermal information". I'm guessing that's ambient temperature inside the case, and not a CPU temp reading.

Please see this:
[joejac@localhost ~]$ acpi -V

I see you've found the acpi command line switches. You can also try acpi -Vp. See if that makes any difference in the output. Again, from the man page, -p is to "use the old /proc interface, default is the new /sys one".

Also, if Neal says he is working on a solution, you can bet it will be a good one.

Hello

Thanks Neal and djohnston
I'm fine, now I have a way to check the temperature from time to time via console. Now in the morning I have 72 to 75 Celsius. I am in a tropical country. The  Vp switch do not give much data, I wait for Neal solution, I am not hurry, this is a free and nice OS. I appreciate a lot your kind help.

[joejac@localhost ~]$ acpi -Vp
Battery 0: charged, 100%, rate information unavailable
Adapter 0: on-line
No support for device type: thermal_zone
No support for device type: fan

Do it as root in a terminal, thanks

Edit:
You must have installed lshw from synaptic...

let display all lshw, and you will see why is 16 logical CPUs...
Use
Code: [Select]
lshw -html > /home/YOU/lshwinfoas root.
It will generate a html file in your home directory called lshwinfo.
Change YOU in your username  ;)
