Yes, interesting. It seems a good work-around. :)

Still, I'd like to find a solution that doesn't involve disabling part of PCManFM.

A "work-around" was what I was going for. It is a FAR cry from a solution.

@Ferdes Fides, are you comfortable editing this file as root? And, is this "work-around" acceptable for now?

I can give you step by step instructions on how to get this file edited if you need. No problem.  ;)

A work-around is good, and I'm glad you found this one, Rudge. :) Very good job! :) :)

Hi Neal and Rudge,

I made an allblack.jpg file which is a solid black wallpaper if needed.  I'm OK using the desktop settings screen
options for wallpaper and selecting allblack.jpg.  I should be able to comment that other file but more
inclined to leave the file as is for now.  My allblack.jpg wallpaper file gives me a "work-around" so to speak.
This will work forever till PCManFM has a solution I'm thinking, and I can change the wallpaper at any time.

Thanks for your time and help on this one.

Could you modify your first post to add [Workaround] to the title, then?

Done.  Was debating to myself if it was a software problem as opposed to a configuration
problem.    Looking from the outside looking in that's all I can discern.  I'd bet my time
it's a DE software problem.   How could it not be ?

Anyway, let me know what your findings are.

THX.

So far, all I know for sure is x crashes when PCManFM calls for the fill with background color. Whether the problem is how x handles the call or how PCManFM calls, I don't know.

It seems at first light the DE would be independent of the File Manager.  The DE should setup
first and then the other programs, but for efficiency, they are no doubt interrelated then.   Hmmm.
The DE, or x, should  take care of background colors, etc.   and then file managers and so forth be
added to the mix.   But, it's a minor problem of some other logic obviously.

Something is in that source code causing it to hit that logout screen.   That's where I'd go.
Wish I had something more interesting to say.   I apologize in advance for that then.

Thanks for your response.

Hay,, I think I ran across something.

That file I modified had some affect. After loading the desktop without pcmanfm, I changed the wallpaper mode to Fill with background color to see if it would work. It did not (it also did not crash X) BUT, when I put the file back and restarted the desktop,, presto! The settings took.

My desktop is now "filled, with the color,, pink!  :P :P

EDIT: I can now change the color at will.  :D

Ferdes Fides,
The control of the desktop is done by PCManFM. X does not take care of any of that; its job is to be the 'go-between' from DE to kernel.

Rudge,
Good news! Have you tested a switch to wallpaper and back to background color?

I can switch to wallpaper but a switch back, crashes X just like before.  :P ??? ???

Cheer up, I think we at least narrowed the problem down..  ;)

edit: humm after some thought, it's actually more confusing.

2nd edit: just some thoughts, it's not the setting that is causing the problem, it's the switch to the setting.

Hay Neal, I noticed that even when in "background" if you pick a file that is not a valid image, x crashes the same way.  ???

Is there a way to see what code is being used to "switch" too "fill with color" mode?

LOL Yea. One morning I chose a .xcf image (Gimp native) by mistake and crashed x. The 2 events are possibly related.

Yea. Grab the source code and review it in leafpad or whatever text editor you prefer.
